So for a multitude of reasons (Mainly Microsoft incompetence, but I will leave it at that) I decided to switch to Linux.
Currently I’m using Ubuntu 25.10 and wanted to install EVE on it. I’ve heard about Lutris, the running it directly from steam method…But I decide to use a new software that was rather appealing to me: Winboat. It’s basically a windows emulator that let’s you run windows apps on it without the usual hassle of doing so.
Thing is, I’m afraid of login in my account and for some reason get banned…I have quite a bit invested and didn’t want that to happen…So, if anyone could possibly give me any feedback on how well it works or the dangers of using it (AKA Ban), I would appreciate it.
well i would recommand faugus launcher compared to bottles or lutris you dont need ti didle around with settings as much.
if i would rank
faugus (super clean easy to set up)
steam (well its steam and easy to set up)
heroic (clean but epic games and easy to set up)
bottles (clean need to fiddle a bit)
lutris (not so clean need to fiddle a bit)
in terms of easy to use
i dont know performance wise ???
but i assume more or less they are all the same ±2-3fps
i terms of philosophy well that’s a question people should answer to themself
also i would not recommend using some sorts of vms
unless you do have a specific use case this is worth it
Running EVE via Steam is without any doubt the easiest way to do this. Steam should be available in your package manager (may need to enable nonfree packages first), and EVE will just launch and run via Proton by default.
I haven’t, because I already have Steam installed for all my other games (even non-Steam games, it’s easy to add a third party game to launch with Proton, and you still get the Steam chat and all the other features).
well i dind not say steam is bad.
but if all you want to do is eve online its a bit much to have steam installed
3rd party software works by default on faugus.
and the key issue i have with steam is what you already mentioned.
it comes with x amount of features 80% of feature that are unnecessary redundant and so on.
most of the people just want to run the game they desire, not more not les.
so all they need is one thing that does one thing and it does it good.
for community stuff most of the time people will use discord and not steam
All software would be third-party on Faugus. I’m sure it works just fine, same as Lutris, I’m just saying if you already have Steam installed, like most of us probably will have, you can just use Steam for this rather than needing to add yet another launcher program.
It’s 50/50. Most single-game communities will be on Discord these days, yeah, but I also have a lot of friends across multiple games, and Steam is perfect for that. Steam is also very practical for multiplayer/co-op games, where you can easily join a friend’s lobby directly through Steam.
Neither solution is optimal for every use case, but I do think if you already have Steam installed, you may as well just use that for EVE. This also has the benefit of adding another Linux machine to the Steam hardware survey, which over time will make sure more publishers will tell their devs to make a Linux version of their game also. Linux is currently sitting at about 3% and climbing, which is already getting into the kind of marketshare where a publisher will look at the extra workhours for the developer vs the potential extra market of customers and say “Hmm, okay, yeah, making a Linux version of the game won’t be a waste of time”.
