Just for purely for a mental exercise and giggles, I think that I can help you make a better decision with your money, and get the most out of your EvE experience without having to drop $40k on otherwise useful money.
Banks and credit unions like it when you allow them to hold onto your money. They reward you at a defined percentage called a “interest rate”. In a typical savings (and at some places checking) account, this rate is quite… meaningless and low in our late-stage capitalist society.
There are of course more active (and rather risky) ways to make good of your money to get MORE money (Stock market, Retail Arbitrage, etc) . But I am going to stick with the simple and lazy and FDIC/NCUA insured CERTIFICATE OF DEPOSIT! (CD)
Lets say that you will be for the forseeable future be pew-pewing spaceships. Lets take your $40k and shop around…
Ah, I see a certain credit union offering a modest FIXED 4.17%apy for a 12 month (CD)! lets go with that.
Now, lets fast forward the clock 12 months. Congrats! You got $1,668 freedom bux for honoring your CD! Totaling $41,668!
If my math is correct (you should treat this with suspicion because I hate math):
P = Principal amount (the beginning balance). $40,000
R = Interest rate (usually per year, expressed as a decimal). 0.0417
T = Number of time periods (generally one-year time periods). 12 months
40,000 x 0.0417 = 41,668
Source of formula because my second grade teacher always told me “ShOw YoUr wOrK”
Now let’s take that money and do this…
1 year of Omega = $149.90
Train the Magic 14 by buying roughly 8 Large skill injectors via 1500 PLEX = $64.99
We now have left over $41,453.11
Now is the time to decide what you want to do make income. There are many options and paths to do so. Unfortunately, most active players in this game utilize 2 or 3 alts… (unless you are like that one guy who terrorizes smaller alliances purely on the power of hate and possibly meth and/or caffeine with 50+ alts holy moley!) It would probably be best to roll 2 for now, one will do the work, the other will be your publicly facing one doing the buying/selling/communicating. You can scale as needed.
Whatever you decide to do, you need to identify the activity you do short term to make money as you actively play, and invest in long term activities with that short term money. You may also want to look into lowering your effective tax rates if you are doing business in highsec.
Do the missions. Do the Missions. Do the Missions. Do the Tutorial There are some that point out to you fallacies of why certain tactics of throwing battleships only at a problem is a bad idea and other useful things that are good to know.
If you are going for Nullsec, communication is key, be social, help others, etc Also, save/record your private communications on your PC or a spare harddrive with names and date or record/screenshots/audio, incase there is some psyopo or someone out to hurt you and you are questioned about it by people above you later.
Usually spare drive is $50 for a good one. Leading us to now a total of $41,403.11 remaining.
I found myself writing a book at this point, But lol in short if you drop 40k you are going to get found out and sent through a wood chipper.
But if you at least follow the banking part, you’ll have money for a year’s subscription or two, You already having the skills needed to not immediately get clonked on impact when you gotta go toe to toe with some other choobler(s) and You’ll have more money then what you started with year after year to support your new hobby and start getting to know people who can be useful in your dominance.
I just helped you save $40,000 and helped you make more to pay for your new hobby in eve and it will do so year over year and you will slowly become LORD eMpoRar entErnum faciNum lAtinUm (Your character name here) in many years time.
You’re Welcome.
(This was meant to be a teasing reply that went too far, I am not fiduciary or whatever equates to a regulated trusted person on your piece of earth).
