Tell me why structure explosions are harmless

Explosions should only damage griefers.

Judging from the opening sequence, — if pods were resistant to anything — I would expect it to be explosive damage.

Then why does void, rockets, phased plasma and what not work so well on scrambling them?

I won’t allow your practical evidence to interfere with my theory-crafting Ax’l

:open_mouth:

Just call it “handwavium”

Okay.

“handwavium” is now the antimatter equivalent of “veritassium” in my lexicon.
Imagine a universe …

Years ago, many many years ago, in fact a lot of them, you could get a mission from an agent that told you to target something that looked like a silo, because if you blew up the silo, it destroyed the bad guys in the area. The agent explicitly said “blow up things, and that will blow up other things.”

There is still a mission where you fly a frigate out to some bad guy base and blow it up, destroying the bad guys, but the premise there is that the agent has loaded the frigate with explodium already so it isn’t quite the same.

Of course, data sites do explode every now and then, obliterating any cheap frigates in the vicinity.

The reason why CCP have disabled most types of AOE damage have been stated. No amount of griping about “realism” will get them to change their minds.

If you want realism go play KSP or Universe Sandbox.

Or, you know, just go outside and play something with real physics. Like Soccer or basebase, or Tiddlywinks.

Not looking for realism, I am looking to extend the limits of my understanding.
Handwavium is fine so long as there is a practical reason for it; a shame if not.

People have already explained several practical reasons why AOE damage upon structure destruction would be bad for the game. People have also provided practical explanations for why a big block of metal breaking up in space wouldn’t affect space warships.

I am appreciative of all of the comments in this discussion.
If you feel that there is nothing more to add then perhaps you should add nothing more.

At the most basic level the explanation is “It’s a Game”, and the designers (quite rightly IMHO) decided against explosions harming nearby ships.
