Hmmm… I just realized that, by giving the players the tools to create SKINs, CCP is kind of giving away the business model of selling ship SKINs, even if CCP holds back some tricks and tools to make “official” SKINs, players will just imitate them or use their own SKINs instead.

That would explain why SKINR is so goddam expensive, but on the other hand, CCP is essentially giving away its art direction and asset customization with a dubious business case for it. Because, if people must work and pay their own SKINs, they better be worth their effort (= being as cheap as irrelevant they are).
