Raw pumpkin is edible, but its so plain, at least the ones I tasted recently. I would say it may have appeal as a survival food when eaten raw, together with seeds. What is interesting, american colonists soldiers in independence war, when in the field, when they have found a pumpkin, they devoured it. Usually roasted it whole near a fire, with something stuffed into pumpkin, like a pear or apple. But they always throwed out the seeds. They did not even thought these seeds were edible.

Its about the dose. I ate some too, munching them, not knowing that, but it turns out that few seeds are not harmful for adult human, you can detoxify yourself easily if you are healthy. But when eaten by dozens its another story. You can feel really sick.
If you swallow them whole by accident, without munching, they are completely safe.
