I generally launch 5-10 accounts at once, then read forums or something while they load up. I’ve previously mentioned that they now load slower, apparently due to consuming all the available memory (almost 2 gigs per account launched).
One other small change I noticed: when I launch, then go back to browser, my browser screen is active in the foreground and the various EVE accounts launched are in the background. It used to be that once I figured the accounts were loaded, I’d click on a part of the Character Select screen showing beyond the borders of my foreground browser screen. This would select that account, show me the daily login window where I’d click CLAIM, then CLOSE and it would show my characters, their location, SP and ISK etc.
Now, when I click on a portion of the window in the background, it selects that account login but ALSO closes the Daily Login Claim window and shows my characters. So I have to click the little gift box with the up-arrow, open the CLAIM window again, Claim, Close and go back to my chars to select.
It’s a small thing and easily gotten around (can just click the window boxes on the task bar rather than part of the window showing in the background). And who knows, maybe it’s just me. Just figured I’d point out it’s one more unnecessary little time-waster.
I would like to know why in the world I want to use this new launcher as is right now?
I have listened to ppl have glitches in game,
I have witnessed ppl not being able to voice comms on discord after installing the new launcher
I have read here and on reddit how crap the new launcher is just to use it to log in, select characters, accounts etc.
Are these things going to get fixed before you force it on customers?
One click on the desktop icon and I am in playing the game. Today all the developers want to build overkill launchers, with links to websites, and information overload. As I said above, if your launcher doesn’t end up killing the game for me, I will continue to play for free and occasionally buy Plex as a thank you for this game. Otherwise, I can seek my amusements elsewhere.
You can do this in eve too, you just need to fetch the login token. I think the reason they do this is because it means - like you say - they can push us out to their website (or another application) using fetched tokens and “roughly” know that it’s secure. I am not fond of it myself either, overcomplicating things for the sake of overcomplicating things.
I already feel the loss of no longer seeing the last logged in system and station in the character details on the launcher. Which means I fall back to the old launcher.
As someone who managers a larger number of accounts for logistics, etc., it was very helpful to see where I last left a cyno, etc., without having to fully log in.
Remind me again why anyone would require a new launcher ?
Don’t tell me that BS about improved user experience. I don’t experience a launcher - i use it to start the game i want to experience.
There are so many things worth fixing in Eve - why on earth have you decided to put effort into something so completely irrelevant instead?
When can we expect bigger portraits in a launcher window with small dimensions (ie. get rid of useless white space) and the manual sorting of characters in the account rows? Right now, one account has my most used char in spot 1, another in the last spot, yet another in the middle. This is highly annoying as it requires even more unnecessary mouse-movement.
When is the Active Account hue going to be actually easily visible without requiring polarizing goggles to better discern it from the background?
There is an old acronym called KISS, which means Keep It Simple Stupid. I apply this ethic to all of my real world business. I cut the fat and leave the lean. People who have looked at my desktop ( my real work desk not the PC ) have commented on how zen it appears. A cluttered desktop reflects the cluttered mind. I don’t even have pictures of the family on there as work and family are two separate things. It would be very nice to see a company learn that simplistic or minimalist designs are far superior than baffled confusion.
@DeODokktor I looked up how to access the token. If I had the time to mess with it, I could write up Pearl script for it. It appears to be more trouble than it is worth and not everyone will be able to code their own SSO launcher. There seems to be no direct method to just login as I would in other games. At present, the old launcher is still working for me, but there is a notice stating it is no longer available to download. Only a matter of time before the new launcher is the mandate.
EDIT: Feb. 7th 2024 CCP has mandated the new launcher. May God have mercy upon our souls…
I do prefer the old, i think ill go back to it until i can no longer use it. CCP love spending time on things like this and they dress it up like we give a ■■■■, all i want to do is open the characters I want to log on with in the easiest way possible, all that fluff around it can go do one.
Double check graphics settings of new profiles.
I did not notice any slowdown. Also, a hint: enable delay between client startups - it helps reduce the stampeding issue when multiple clients trying to access disk in slightly different places.
How can I remove the beta laucher completely so I can do a fresh install?
I tried to install the new one but it fails to find my accounts. i deleted the evelauncher directory from %localappdata% and reinstalled it but still it wants me to create an acoount. when I say I already have one, the account list is empty.
The new launcher provides absolutely zero benefit to the old one. It actually is a step back not to be able to see the last system a character was in and have even more clicking to start the game. This is a great example of CCP not listening to any feedback their customers provide and waste time and resources on something unwanted and taking steps back in usability. Calling this an improved experience is an audacity.
Why does the steam version have an identical looking, but different launcher from the standalone?
I can quite literally launch the steam version’s launcher with any version of wine, outside of steam completely, yet if I try to launch the standalone installer it gives the “please run as normal user” error.
Steam installs items under Program Files (x86)/Steam/Steamapps etc, even though EVE itself is a 64-bit app (ugh, gw valve ) and should be in Program Files on amd64 machine.
CCP launcher installs under C:\EVE because apparently their entire dev team never heard of CSIDL CSIDL (Shlobj.h) - Win32 apps | Microsoft Learn which is worse than valve putting the wrong bittedness program in a given directory.
The two launchers might both store items in %appdata% and so its possible for the two installations to both work, as the same time, being different.
Similar deal with OSX, as steam does not ‘iconify’ everything into applications, but if you install the EVE Launcher into OSX, both will reference the ~/Library or ~/Support folder for content.
So, does the beta launcher have account labels yet?
Considering you’re intending to force it upon everyone tomorrow … and considering that this feature has been requested again and again in feedback over the last year. And that it should take like 10 minutes to implement.
