Is it just me or with the removal of the character select screen we also cannot get our daily rewards without logging into our character fully? I get my dailies by launching all my alpha accounts at once and this seems to make that impossible.
Additionally: Another Launcher overhaul and no highlighting of the Universe lore portal…
Cynicism and suspicion, since you obviously missed the sarcasm.
That said, I expect it’s future-proofing since a)this is just the beta, and b)there’s at least three areas of ‘COMING SOON’ functionality not yet incorporated into the new launcher. So it’s fairly clear that part of the purpose here is…
One-click ‘BUY MOAR PLEX’ and
HERE LOOKIT THE MICROTRANSACTIONS IN YET ANOTHER PLACE BECAUSE WE PROMISED THE NEWS FEED WOULDN’T HAVE ADS BUT WE NEVER PROMISED THE ADS WOULDN’T GET MORE ROOM!!!
And, you know, pumping up the DAU #s / shutting up people who keep asking ‘how many of those numbers get past character select?’
How very cynical and suspicious of you! (in other words: it’s not just you, no.)
EDIT: Seriously, Gerard, any time you see one of the first ‘benefits’ being touted as “offering personalized content”… it’s a marketing tool.
They included the New Eden News in the news feed! Sure, with only 2 feed items visible by default, and the ‘we put up like 4 things a week in ads and promotional items’, you’ll never see the New Eden News items in that feed… but they’re there! If you scroll down… no no, keep scrolling… keep going… keep… THERE’S ONE! Sure, it’s like 60% of the way down the feed, but you’ll scroll through that EVERY SINGLE DAY, right? Riiiiiiight?
Well, this has been a complete disaster. Ended up destroying my entire installation. All configurations and settings lost, double disk space (ran C: out of space), game does not run properly even after running the old launcher.
I ended up wiping EvE entirely off the system here. I guess I will re-install from scratch with the old launcher at some point when I have the motivation to re-configure everything.
So … it seems that no matter if you choose the game directory or the default install directory that it comes with , it will download 3.7 GB initialy and the rest of the full 30 GB game.
Since I did not wanted to end up with Eve x2 and have an aditional 33.7 GB of wasted space , I just unintalled Eve and then relauched it to do its thing .
Probably the old launcher will no longer be there and if there will be serious connection problems with this new one … well then I guess I’m screwed .
Your UI settings will be gone, too. I don’t know how many accounts you had, but be prepared to restore them all manually. Hope you didn’t have custom overviews like I did.
Settings are not so much of a problem … Only have one omega one and 2 alpha accounts that I barely use…
My UI is saved in some mails I have distributed to my alts and it is also saved on a notepad in the game… they should still be there for me to load them.
The new installation process requires no input, just give it a few seconds.
Where does the launcher install itself? Is it like software like discord that gives you no option at all where you want to install it and it just installs in C?
It will tell you that a previous installation registered a shared cache location and ask if you want to keep it. Say NO.
Let the game download completely.
Profit!
After the above, it managed to find not only all the login credentials and Launcher settings, but all the in-game settings (overview etc.) so everything is back to normal, yay!
You’ll love this: it doesn’t. You re-run the new launcher… off the file you downloaded. I can’t find another functioning instance of it anywhere. There is a ‘launcher.exe’ in the EvE\launcher\appdata\EVE_Online_Launcher-2.2.999545.win32 folder that it just installed to (that whole folder tree didn’t exist when I got home from work this morning), but it doesn’t actually work.
EDIT: Correction! It installs a desktop shortcut (I have desktop icons turned off, but I decided to check), but apparently not one to the start menu. Going into the properties of the desktop shortcut, it sticks the new launcher in C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\eve-online
Note that AppData’s often a hidden folder that requires administrator access to un-hide.
Profile selection is weird, because the ‘default’ profile is selected by de-selecting a custom profile, rather than by selecting the default profile as we did in the old launcher.
For example, in the old launcher I had two profiles, ‘default’ and ‘multibox’. And I could select either profile.
In the new launcher I now can only select the ‘multibox’ profile, and if I wish to select the ‘default’ profile I need to de-select the multibox profile, which confused me:
No ‘default’ profile, need to click the X to get that
Character selection
It could be nice to be able to doubleclick a portrait to directly log in that character past the log-in screen.
The character selection box has some unneeded selection of the previous character I clicked, for example in the next picture it seems like I’m about to click two characters in the third account, rather than just the one on the left:
Character selection: Information on the right side of the launcher is about the hooded figure. With my mouse I’m hovering the character bottom left to select it. Why does character bottom right also light up?
Also maybe just me, but it slightly bugs me to see portraits and account names move up and down by a pixel when selecting different accounts.
Account selection
Is missing.
I cannot click a single button to log in an account. I have to select a character, then click the ‘Play Now’ button to log in using that character to get to the log-in screen.
It would be nice to have a button to log in an account to the character select page with a single click, like the old launcher has.
Setting up a new launch group selection and modifying it so it selects the right account you wish to log in to the character screen is not an easy alternative, and making us tick the box to skip immediately logging in the character seems like a workaround that breaks the main utility of this launcher (which is to directly log in a character from the launcher), so isn’t a quick alternative either for those times I only wish to log in to a login screen.
Launch group selection
I like how it remembers which group I had selected last time I had the launcher open, so that I can immediately click ‘Launch’ to get into the game.
I like how I can select which character to log in with in these launch groups.
Minor detail: it doesn’t know what capital letters are (these names did have caps when I wrote them):
Okay, thank you. I nope out of this until I can install the launcher in my Games partition. There’s already enough stuff cluttering C with stuff I don’t want in that partition. Thank you for checking.
Please make it so that we can collect the daily rewards just by clicking a single button in the launcher. This has been a sore sticking point for ages now. It’s a massive hassle to log into multiple accounts to go through the process manually, and actually deters me (and I’m sure others) from playing the game because of the sheer frustration. It takes over a minute to cycle through an account, and doing it for like 20 accounts is nearly half an hour. Make it easy for us to get this daily step out of the way, and you’ll see a higher engagement ratio with the game itself.
Hmm interestingly when I discovered the error (downloading entire client again, not starting via the new launcher), all my Settings were kept. I even deleted the whole EVE folder and did a clean install via the old launcher and still all my settings persist. Just never touch the files in your windows user folder.
For some weird reason the option to always go to character selection is placed under launcher settings > game client , from where you can select to run the game on DX 11.
