The new EVE Online launcher Beta

Hey Avalon, nice to see you are still around.

General feedback:

  • This launcher seems to fix the horrible lag issues I had with the current production one on 4K screens. This is a huge QoL thing for me, thank you

  • I would like a way to see which character(s) are running, and to be able to kill a specific client from the launcher. The game has become increasingly unstable recently, and it requires me to kill the game process on a regular basis. But it’s a pita to find the right one in task manager so without the ability to log out from the Nestor, it’s going to be annoying.

Steam Deck support?
Or Linux support in general?

#protip: if you add runas /trustlevel:0x20000 between wine and the path to the executable, it will run as a regular user rather than as admin.

But I run this from the command line. I have no idea how Steam does it.

Specifically against what?
Being able to launch using a play button on the account, as the current launcher allows?

Can you add “Account Label” feature from old launcher? I use it to number all my accounts for easier finding.

I’ve checked the other launchers that I have for other games, it seems that all of them are installed here:

C:/user/“youruser”/appdata/local/

I know for sure that none of them asked when I installed those games where to install the actual launcher. I don’t know why would this be a problem for you.

Couple of feedback points as others have expressed.

  • Please allow us to resize to desired size.

  • Double clicking char to play.

  • Omega time remaining viewable.

  • For me, having Char stuff on left of launcher and news on the right side of the launcher would be better (see screenshot below).

Not even tried the new launcher but FOR ME PERSONALLY…

I only want to know when my next indy job is DUE…

I could care less about Skillpoints/isk/emails on 9/10 of my accounts but Indy slots are kinda important to me…

Just saying.

using Lutris with Lutris - Open Gaming Platform and lutris-7.2-2 as the WINE version for the initial install with the old launcher, I download the new installer and stick it in drive_c/EVE/ . I then edit lutris to launch that. I get the (giant!) EVE text popup, but nothing more. Now I swap to running drive_c/users/$username/AppData/Local/eve-online/eve-online.exe and switch to lutris-GE-Proton7-43 . Launch, nothing happens, launch again and it’ll come up and bob’s your uncle.

To be clear: lutris-7.2-2 fails to run the launcher due to a javascript error with uv_pipe_open, and proton fails to install the launcher because the installer insists on running as an unprivileged user, and proton doesn’t offer the runas executable from wine-staging.

To repeat a few suggestions I find I’d like; Doubleclick login, and seeing when Omega time expires, and maybe a repeat of the information on the character selection screen as we’re skipping that.

I’d like to add the inclusion of labels, and not just account labels as much as I love those. Character labels. As much as I remember my character faces as I spent a bit of time making their profile pictures look good for my own enjoyment, I’d also to label them so I can more easily remember exactly what it is my characters are specialized for.

Also the ability to collapse all the accounts to make it a bit easier to scroll through.

The new launcher or the process of installing the new launcher created new pilot UI setting and configs. I had to copy & paste back the old configs from d_eve_sharedcache_tq_tranquility.

It would be useful to duplicate Launch Groups so that you can make similar ones with slight tweaks. New Launcher looks great though! love the new profiles swapping with ease!

WINE version? 32/64 prefix? winetricks version?

I’m stuck with the lack of runas.exe in 8.5. And downgrading to 5.12-staging (last known package with runas) leads to other issues.

Can’t run past the requirement of unprivileged user. This is a known bug, of course: WineHQ Bugzilla – Bug 40613 – Multiple applications require UAC implementation to run installer/app as a normal user instead of administrator (WhatsApp Desktop, Smartflix, Squirrel Installers, OneDrive)

I just downloaded it and tried it out and so here are my thoughts.

Kinda Like - Mmmm
I like the fact that the EVE logo and the menu headers (News/EVE Store/Account/Support) are ranged left rather than centred as they were on the old launcher.

The bug reporting feature - This looks very slick and easy to access. I really like the fact that you can file bug reports straight from the launcher. I wondered if there ought to be a facility to include a screenshot of what’s happening though. Love the icon too!

I love the colour-coding vertical bars to the left-hand side of the account listings showing alpha and omega status - subtle and elegant.

I like the View News Archive button at the bottom of the left-hand column.

Really Hate - Grrr
The lack of ability to resize the launcher - The old launcher was much, much more compact (because it could be resized) I play on a smaller screen and the new one is just so space hungry - urg!

I don’t like the way that the dates on the news items in the first column appear in a Year/Month/Day format - This really ought to be in a European style: Day/Month/Year IMHO.

There used to be an ability to have an account label for each account. I found this really helpful but this has disappeared on the new launcher - please bring it back!

I really don’t like the way that the account name is on the right-hand side and the character names are on the left-hand side - feels very messy.

I really don’t like the way that you can’t control the order that the characters appear in within the account. On the older launcher, these used to organise by the most recent access now they seem fixed and random, not even alphabetical for example. Urg!

I really don’t like the fact that the < Play Now > button is separated from the account listings, on the old launcher the positioning felt way more logical and clean. (I really preferred the small roundels with an arrowhead in them to be honest).

Not at all sure - Ummm
The typography on the old launcher felt much less heavy and bold than it does on the new launcher - have you changed the font? If you have, the old font was way better.

On some levels, the mini pictures of the characters are a nice touch but they are pretty space hungry so maybe they should only be visible when you click on the account?

The account icons are a little bit clearer on the new launcher but a bit big and clunky. Maybe somewhere in between the old and new size to make them more compact?

The graphic above the (rather clunky) play now button feels a bit wasteful space-wise - it does nothing and just enlarges what is an already large launcher window.

The notifications and offers box seems really large to me. I do ‘get’ why CCP wants to direct players to these things but the net result is that the whole launcher ends up overly large and clunky.

I don’t really understand the corporation button (at the moment it’s a placeholder) but I think this might be handy depending on what it does (as a CEO some degree of see what corp members had been doing would be handy here).

Summary
There are a lot of bells and whistles on the new launcher however this feels over-complicated and the whole thing has ended up much more ‘clunky’ and really … B _ I _ G

Whilst I’m sure that there might be ‘in the background’ technical advantages to the new launcher I’m not feeling massive benefits here, sorry. In terms of the look and feel it feels a bit like we are trying to fix something that wasn’t actually broken.

Like Gerard Amatin above, generally speaking, I prefer the minimalistic look and feel of the old launcher to this new variant so I’m going to be sticking with that for now - please, please, please don’t stop it from working!

Small nitpick you can ignore: Y/M/D is ISO, not US. US would be M/D/Y.

Request: please make the beta launcher available as a public beta on steam?

This is just a small note that the only correct date format is ISO-8601. Thank you for your time.

Launch Group Names

I started with All Caps. It becomes Title Case. And the selection is lower case.
