The new EVE Online launcher Beta

None of my games are installed on C. C is my OS partition with very limited space. I have my G(ames) partition specifically setup on a much faster harddrive to get the most out of the games in terms of performance. Because of this, I have at least 2 problems with software that does not allow me to choose where to install it: lack of space to install it and worse performance. Looking at some reports here, the better performance of my Games harddrive will be much needed to make this launcher work well.

If you have no issues with software dictating to you where it installs itself, that’s your prerogative. I think this is a terrible development approach that causes issues for knowledgeable users who don’t want a mess on their computer.

Please offer a compact, text-only option for the “news feed.”

Can the launcher update both servers’ files at the same time? I don’t get why when I select SiSi in the launcher it only starts updating. Same thing with verifying files on the old launcher where you have to choose each server when you verify game files.

I noticed that the new launcher is missing the sign-in with Facebook option, is that feature fully deprecated?

Hm Launcher Groups are only viable if you have multiple accounts. As long as you are working with a single one u just need them to collect the rewards.
From a UX standpoint its not a big step up currently compared to the old launcher.

It was downloading 17GB for a launcher and that seemed a bit much, so I killed it after 3GB.

  1. I accepted the default location thinking you guys know where it should be installed, here I read that it’s not the case (shared cache). You might want to specify that or make it work
  2. I read here that people are losing their entire UI, that’s a no go for me. I set it up years ago and would have to dig up where I got the info from. Perhaps you want to incorporate a possibility to keep it?

Question, i interrupted the 16GB download, does anyone know where within shared cache this is installed so I can remove it?

Ps. I am usually a front runner with beta software usually, but you leave such essential information out of the instruction email that I won’t be doing that anymore for Eve. There is a difference between testing beta software and being a test object myself.

when you click on the account and you see the 3 chars on a account … you should be able to see in hat system they are

I only want to know when this new launcher stops being optional so I can plan for a few hours of resetting all my settings for everything… again.
It would be the third time now.
I had to reset them when the new UI became permanent.
I had to redo them when they disappeared without explanation and soon again for the new launcher.
sigh

And reading some of the posts it looks like the installation is another mystery to solve. grrreat
@CCP_Stroopwafel Do you have a date when this launcher becomes the sole one and be mendatory?
I don’t look forward to all this. I may mess up my computer.

Looking at this picture by @Kroton_Zateki I wonder why the PLEX icon and Omega icons are grayed out. Gray is the color for Alpha accounts and PLEX has been yellow since time immemorial. Making these icons gray removes much needed recognizability from the UI and disconnects it from the ingame UI. It also breaks with the rest of the launcher UI where icons have a blue color (like the Status Ready icon or the Militia icon).

There’s also a hilarious text cut-off at the top under the Plex Vault. 3… are wider than 1 n, and there is a ton of empty space to the left of the text field. The buttons are inconsistent, too. Why does “Client is Running” have 2 cutoff corners, but “View News Archive” or “Add Account” only has one? Are Photon devs working on this, by chance, because Photon has the same inconsistencies plastered all over.

What I also really don’t like is that the ad card on the left is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too prominent and more important news items are relegated to obscurity.

Will you return the button to force start the update process for the client? Since the previous version of the launcher was removed, it is very inconvenient to start the client update process. Besides closing the launcher to start the update download, there is currently no way to force the start of the update process and the automatic start is slower than snail-pace.

I think you misunderstood. The launchers are installed in C , for which none of them gave the option to install them anywhere else , but the games are installed on another partition that it allowed me to choose. The launchers that are installed in C, only take a few hundred MB of space for each one.

For example Eve launcher installed in C and has 450 MB , but the game itself is on E with 31.3 GB. Paradox launcher has 685 MB on C and the game it launches (Stellaris) is on E with 15.8 GB, etc.

I’m just saying that the launchers for games do not take that much space for them to be a problem . I’m not saying where to install your games  . I would have also preffered to have the option to also install the launchers in the games directory, but none of them had this option.

I miss the times when Games neither needed launchers nor Windows User Directories to work. Whats so problematic to store all individual settings inside the game directory or cloud-based online so you have them applied whenever you log in from wherever?

A more civilised way would be D/M/Y, smallest period to longest.

Some kind of profile management would be useful, Im missing the previous simple one which at least allowed copying profiles etc. Currently the biggest gripe for me.

As for addons, it would be perfect if there was a way to launch into char selection rather than into a selected toon without switching the options toggle - say click account name instead of character portrait to be brought to login screen?

While groups and the options switch help to work around this, it’s really unwieldy - there are cases when you want to go into char select screen, and wait there, or you want to distribute rewards across characters, etc, while typically you rather log into a chosen char making the options switch or groups pain to use.

Edit: and please, can we double click the portrait for login, rather than single click portrait, single click login button?

We discovered you can actually set it to always go to the character select screen instead, which of course removes the entire point of the feature :frowning:

All my launchers are in my Game partition as well. Thank Bob this was possible with the paradox launcher. I just hope that they add the ability to change the install location for the launcher. It makes no sense to have the launcher in a different partition than the game itself. Until then I won’t touch this thing.

I just took the default. Went very fast. But name does look strange. Didn0t seem to need to download anything. (Haven’t tried “play” yet though)

I have recreated my default launcher group - and that is all the feedback for now:

  • doesn’t open character selection automatically.
  • Thought I had to go back and add haracters from main screen.
  • What is “Add launch Group”? Is that make a new one?
  • Create: fine for first go, but shouldn’t it switch to edit/update/modify - not continue as “create”

PLEASE NOTE!

This message is just to make sure everyone understands the side-effects of installing this new launcher.

It will reinstall the entire game client, which means:

All client and User Interface customizations will be lost!

Overview setup and settings, individual window customizations, chat window settings, you have to set them all up again, for each and every account that you have!

Very ****ing annoying and a complete pain in the ***, especially since I was not expecting it.

That is all.

Don’t forget the 'UUUUGE ad card on the left and the now even smaller, even fewer actual news items. In the current launcher, you at least have the opportunity to expand it to see more “news” cards (of which 80% are just more ads). In the launcher before the current, you could scroll down a list of news items without having to leave the launcher or change the window size. This newest iteration indeed feels more like a storefront than a game launcher.

Save your settings into a separate zip archive and then just restore them back into the new settings folder. You should do that on a regular basis anyway because EVE has a history of deleting your settings on a whim.
