Ganking has been part of EVE since 2003. Players loved Burn Jita and Hulkageddon so much they decided to vote to give James 315 the authority to implement a permanent ganking backbone in the form of the New Halaima Code of Conduct and the heroic agents and permit-compliant miners who make up the New Order.

CCP did a study a number of years ago, and concluded that getting ganked actually improves player retention.
