So, one of the policies in the newly announced social media ban (in the :united_kingdom:) is a restriction on adults being able to message under- 16s in “gaming apps”. It’s unclear atm if they mean apps on phones and tablets or any gaming application that can be played on multi-devices.

That’s going to be interesting for orgs like Fenris to manage; would kinda kill local chat for kids and how do you war dec a corps if you’re not allowed to contact them in-game?

Maybe it’s time FC sucked-it-up and made Eve 16+?

Mandatory Blocking of Stranger Communication

The law mandates a strict block on functions that allow strangers to communicate with children under the age of 16. For a sandbox MMO like Eve Online, where the entire game is built around a single shared server, local chat, open-world recruitment, and corporate interaction with strangers, this poses a massive hurdle. No Livestreaming Capabilities [1]

If an MMO features built-in streaming or links directly to interactive streaming ecosystems, these elements must be blocked for users under 16. The government explicitly named gaming sites with livestreaming capabilities as a primary target

To comply and avoid massive regulatory fines, game developers will have to institute robust age assurance technologies. Major platforms are already reacting; for instance, Xbox began rolling out age verification notices to UK players using credit cards, government IDs, or facial scans to prevent unverified accounts from accessing social features. Game publishers like CCP Games (Eve Online) will be legally required to enforce similar robust age checks

The “Friend-Only” Pivot or Soft-Bans

Because completely redesigning a single-server universe like Eve Online to partition under-16 users from strangers is incredibly complex, many developers may choose to either:

  • Lock under-16 accounts out of the game entirely if they cannot guarantee stranger-blocking.
  • Strictly restrict the account’s social features exclusively to a pre-approved, verified “Friends-Only” list, effectively muting local chat, global channels, and open-space messaging

considering the above, i think FC would most likely change the rating and change it so 16 and under cannot register accounts, even with a parents help..

I’d solve it by putting a UK button in the game. If you press it, you are now in UK mode, which means, among deleting all possibilities of communication, that multiple steel bars are now displayed on your screen. Easy way to make the game compatible with UK laws and add some local flair. God bless the queen!

Actually this is not a Fenris problem, since they are Icelandic and not the UK, US, etc.. This policy for the UK seems to be focused on UK adults to follow and not any gaming division what-so-ever. In short, if a UK adult speaks to a 15 year-old in this or any other game; it is up to the UK monitors to “catch them” and prosecute the adult.

In the end, these ludicrous laws and are almost impossible to enforce. Here in Michigan, there is a state law still on the books; You cannot tie your pet alligator to a fire plug.

If you have a scenario of a Corp with and under-16 account as CEO in HS…

You can war dec them :check_box_with_check:

You can’t send them any messages, in game, on discord or in local :cross_mark:

Pirates could take down a station but could not extract any protection $ :cross_mark:

So the whole HS piracy thing (w/ under 16s) becomes how good you are at grabbing a/the core :white_question_mark:

Understand it’s very niche, doesn’t happen much, but how do you block the contact?

Indeed. I have a friend there and even in person, out of UK, he’s scared to THINK against the cult. He’s been reprogramed to no.think/discuss or face repression/social ban. He works in a public institution.

How would you know the CEO is under 16 unless you ask and/or he tells you? And if he is and tells you he’s 27, and you talk to him – does that still get you prosecuted for it? Underage users have already learned to bypass age filters on facebook and on other platforms to get access to adult content. This isn’t difficult to bypass. I really don’t know who they think they’re fooling with these regulations.

It’s like they’re playing whack-a-mole, but are oblivious to it. Pretty soon they will see that this isn’t working and a new regulatory system will be set up. Ad infinitum.
