if you’re trying to efficiently run your missions you are not going to pointlessly keep your frigate-oriented drones held in your bay waiting for frigate-sized NPCs to come under your guns’ range nor are you going to intentionally first pick off the frigates with your guns and then move on to the larger ships

So, the drones go out as soon as is practical to deal with what you brought them to deal with.

Generally my Battleships engage at range far in excess to my drone control range, so this doesnt work for me.
