Updated System Requirements - Discontinue Windows 7 and 8 Support

This is… unfortunate.

Given that Microsoft has burned all of the goodwill they accrued over two decades with me, I refuse to downgrade to anything past Windows 7 and thus give Big Brother Bill access to my data. I suppose this does, however, give me a hard date on when I need to get my newer Linux PC (Linux Mint, Debian branch) up and running - presuming EvE will still run on Linux at that point, given the change [edit: this, thankfully, seems likely, as the change will probably simply force the now-beta launcher as the default, which has been reported as working for Linux users, through Steam].

Alternatively, another extended break from EvE might be in order - I’d just have to move my assets from any player-owned structures within one month. A complication, especially given my recently full schedule, to be sure, but that’s what I signed up for when taking up a hobby that relies on live-updates and a corporation, some 12 or so years ago.

sigh

idk what you on about it’s a great party over here in windows 11 with my awesome laptop and all the steam games I can wallow around in. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

It’s lie.
Windows 7 64 bit 1.10%
Windows 8.1 64 bit 0.14%

Gets worse with MS btw. Microsoft no longer even sells Windows 10 since a couple months ago. All you could get from them is the ad-infested malware that is Windows 11.

It’s still 1% of all PCs at least on steam. LOL :joy: :joy:

Give or take a margin of error ofc.

Bow to our Microsoft Overlords!

1% these are also the people playing here.

Its time the 1% upgrade.
I ran into an issue earlier tonight. I was using my galaxy tab E for my workout program, well when i went to start it up, no longer supports my tablet and the app is out of date. Had to use my phone. So now to continue having a larger screen i can see without my glasses, i would need to buy a new tablet

Everything is clear. It’s a shame that CCP treats players who make a profit in the form of subscription purchases so poorly. What is it like for people who bought a subscription for a year and play on Win 7.8?

A lot of players are pretty frigging angry to discover the pathetic and tiny amount of notice that has been given about not continuing support for Windows 7 & 8. December gives paying players no notice, no time and no support to be able to transition! Players should be given a minimum of at least 6 months of notice when these announcements are made, to give players the adequate time needed to invest in new hardware and software. The reasons for this are pretty self-explanatory but I’ll explain them anyway, in case you have been living under a rock.

Many communities are still recovering and getting back on their feet post COVID, combined with the looming inflation problems, expensive costs of living and skyrocketing prices that have affected most countries around the world, ballooning the situation out of control. Combining this with the threats of global conflicts in Ukraine and now the Middle East, prices have continued to climb for many people.

This is one of the reasons why there has been a big boom in older model PC hardware such as graphics cards, RAM and CPU’s having such a strong comeback in the market place, because when people are struggling to put basic essentials such as food on the table or to pay their critical bills, the last thing that they have money for is to buy new computers or hardware.

I know hundreds of people who still run Windows 7 and 8; they are still using the same machines they have had for years and they simply do not have the funds to be able to upgrade their hardware or upgrade their operating system at this time.

I am also in that same position. I also run Windows 7 on all my machines, so I am not in a financial position to just go out and spend thousands of dollars on a new machine that runs Windows 10, just for a game. I was also planning on renewing my 3 month subscription in November this year, but what is the point in doing that if CCP are going to completely screw us over and shut us out as paying customers in December!!?

This decision by CCP is unnecessary, rather ridiculous with not enough adequate time or notice at all and it is going to hurt a lot of players unfairly, when you could have provided other alternatives such as common sense ideas like a backup transitional server for Windows 7 & 8 users for a set period of time or provided a better transitional period of 6 months to give us more time without dumping this decision in our laps with no notice or time whatsoever!

sarcastic But good to see CCP living up to its reputation of burning and screwing over the player base with ridiculous bullsh*t decisions that give us no time at all!! It seems obvious that our money as subscribers is simply not worth anything to CCP anymore to provide us with either more time or provide us with a transitional server that actually supports and looks after those paying subscribers!

Oh and before you use the weak ass excuse that Microsoft no longer supports Windows 7, so therefore you have to update things now to keep up, that is complete bullsh*t. Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 7 quite a long time ago and in that time there hasn’t been any issues, problems or security failures just because of this fact. Kindly look after your player base and stop being pricks.

It’s good that I didn’t pay for the account a year in advance. It can organize a protest Jitaburn for all players who play from a computer running Windows 7.8.

January 2023

I’ve seen this kind of comment a lot in this thread, but could you explain why you need to spend thousands on a computer that runs Windows 10 when the system requirements are identical for Windows 7 and 10, and lower than what is needed to play eve?

Microsoft finished security updates for Windows 7 on January 10th 2023, since then 56 vulnerabilities have been identified.

The 99% should not cater to the 1% of windows 7 users. Get out of the stone age of OS.

There are pretty much no alternatives to Windows/Microsoft. If you like videogames you deal with it lol.

You know what. I actually agree. This thread has gone largely unnoticed since CCP posted it Oct 16th and we are almost at Nov 16. :joy: :joy:

The silence is deafening and speaks volumes to how tiny the windows 7 community is.

Out of the MILLIONS of people who are on the internet and tens of thousands who play EVE online.

Get a cheaper hobby. You knew Windows 7 was dated all the way back in 2018/2019 lol.

Noone will miss the 1% of windows 7 users.

It’s a pretty valid reason and I respectfully disagree with that emotional statement.

Linux, no longer supported by CCP but with a bit of tinkering it works (safely) :see_no_evil::hear_no_evil::speak_no_evil:

I don’t think it was ever supported? idk anything about Linux and tbh I probably don’t as the average joe PC gamer. :joy:

But hay if you can get it working there more power to you!

I think it was supported at one time, not a full client like mac, then there was a lone dev that tested linux stuff but they even stopped altogether

My sub is closer to two years than one and I can’t say I’m thrilled. MCT is running as well.

That said, I have made preparations, but I very much do not appreciate how CCP handled this and will likely opt out of future subscriptions, at least for some time (no worries, there are a lot of other things I can do with my free time).

They have lost revenue with this decision, that much is clear.

EvE isn’t like most other games. What matters here is long-term player retention and, given those are only Steam numbers, they don’t really give the whole picture either, considering there’s a direct launcher available.

Those similar to me, that don’t want to move on to worse Microsoft OS’s, are also far more likely to not appreciate Steam’s practices either, so I’d wager a good amount of us are not running the game through Steam, given our predilections.

While this may not affect many players, it will certainly affect veterans that have been paying CCP for years. How many of those might scramble and find an acceptable solution is anyone’s guess, but this move has, yet again, hit player confidence and goodwill at a time when any sane business should do everything within it’s power to keep such long-time customers happy and paying.

I’ll continue playing EvE via Linux for as long as my sub lasts and will also keep my Win 7 in an emulator for most of my other solo gaming, slowly transitioning what I can. However, this is yet another reason to not renew or further purchase Omega once it expires.

I could probably go and look up data showing how small. Like microscopically sized the Windows 7 community is. Pretty sure it’s probably if Steam says 1% I am pretty sure EVE is not going to pump that number any more higher? :joy:

Same tired argument on how changes impact the vets in the community. It really gets old. Yes, you did just admit that this change wont impact many players and you implied that your community is quite small in EVE. So small that CCP decided to just drop Windows 7 support for this game.

More power to you man. You do you on Linux. You ain’t playing Cities Skylines 2 on Windows 7 I know that for a fact. You ain’t playing Cyberpunk or Starfield on Windows 7. Pretty much any modern AAA title really.

I am a glass half full guy myself.

The new generation of EVE players will take over and enjoy the game.

Have a great day when your sub ends!
