Iâm going to address the whale in the room (yes, itâs bigger than an elephant): the recent update to the Ship Info Window.
Iâm still exploring all the new features in-depth, so Iâll be adding more feedback as I go along in separate posts, but for now, here are some of the main points that jumped out at me.
The New Ship Info Window:
Pros:
- It looks beautifulâno question about it. The design team did a great job making the new window feel fresh and polished. Props to them for that!
- SKIN Application Convenience: While itâs not something everyone might need, itâs a nice touch to have the SKIN application directly in the Ship Info Window, saving the extra step of going through the Fitting Window and Personalization menu. Small win there since more often than not, the Fitting Window is the one open when looking at oneâs Ship, not the Info Window.
- Consistency with Photon UI: The aesthetic lines up nicely with the new Photon UI, bringing it in line with the rest of the updated windows like the Agency, Corporation, and Opportunities windows. I can appreciate that level of consistency across the UI.
Cons:
- A pretty, yet backwards, step in functionality. The original Ship Info Window was simple, effective, and easy to navigate. This new design adds more visual flair but takes away from the core functionality. It also doesnât tie in with other Info Windows (yet⌠OMG, please donât say you are gonna do this to all of them! Oh Lord!).
- Unintuitive Layout: In the previous version, everything was right there. Now, things that used to be quick and easy (like Simulate Ship) are buried in the Fitting tab, which feels awkward and far from reach.
- Pointer Window: The window doesnât tie into the Pointer Window anymore, so links like âType Variationsâ donât work properly. Itâs little things like this that really add up over time.
- Drag-and-Drop: One of the most intuitive and essential features in the game is the drag-and-drop function. Now, we have a tiny chain icon that just doesnât feel as natural or easy to use.
- Too Much Clutter: The extra visual elements (like the circle in the Fitting tab) donât seem to provide any useful information and just add visual clutter.
- No Option to Revert: I get that change is inevitable, but thereâs no way to go back to the old layout if you preferred it. It would have been nice to have the option to choose between the new and old designs.
- Sidebar Is Annoying: The sidebar that pops in and out when you hover over it is distracting and feels unnecessary. It should be a choice to have it pop out, not the default behavior. Having it always visible as an option would feel right.
Bottom Line: While the new window is definitely pretty, it doesnât seem to offer much in terms of actual functionality. I feel like itâs a case of form over function, and right now, the balance is way off.
Quick Rant on Ship Info Windows:
It feels like someone at CCP decided that the Ship Info Window needed a visual overhaul, but unfortunately, it seems like functionality took a back seat in this update. The design team definitely did a great job on the aesthetic side of things, but it feels like there wasnât enough consideration of how the changes impact usability.
In my opinion, the new look might work better for windows that are more focused on action, like the Corporation or Opportunities windows, where a flashy design could fit in better. But for something like the Ship Info Windowâwhere function is keyâthe focus really should have stayed on usability. The window is something we use very often, and the simpler, more efficient design of the old window worked just fine.
It might help to apply something like the â10th Man Ruleâ (link for reference, I didnât read the whole thing) in these situations.
Before making changes like this, ask:
- What exactly are we improving?
- Is this change adding real value for players and their experience?
- Is it necessary?
- What are we sacrificing by making this change?
Had these questions been asked up front, maybe weâd have avoided any work hours resulting the backlash from (seemingly the majority of) Capsuleers unhappy with the changes.
At the end of the day, EVEâs beauty has always been in its depth and functionality. It is awesome how beautiful it can look with graphics cranked up and zoomed in, but when it comes to something like the Ship Info Window, itâs all about efficiency and ease of use. If we can get both form and function to align seamlessly, thatâs when the design really works. I believe most Capsuleers would prefer smoother, more intuitive functionality over a purely aesthetic upgrade.
