Yes, I’ve dusted and cleaned the box; in fact, that’s how I found the issue.
So, my #2 computer has been running hot lately - I do run 2 iterations of EVE on the box but it shouldn’t be running 83C, so I took the side panel off and cleaned it out; VOILA, it started up again and settled into a nice 60C.
BUT, the next day, I started everything up and…..yep, 83C again. Hmmmm. Well, I decided to re-start the box and it again settled into the nice 60C.
Again, this morning, I started everything up, did the dailies and again, it’s running 83C. So, I did the obvious - restarted, brought up both toons and…….60C. Same stations, all parameters the same, - the only change is re-starting the box after the first startup.
This is weird, folks. Anybody got a suggestion why this scenario should be happening?
If the card is very old ( 12 years or more ) best to replace it.
To self repair the card, remove the heatsink / fan and clean off the thermal paste. Apply new paste – I joked about toothpaste – he said it works in a pinch, but best to use thermal paste. Attach the sink / fan and it should be all good.
Sounds like your fans aren’t doing what they’re supposed to do. Install a program that monitors CPU temps and fan speeds, like Hwinfo64 or MSI Afterburner.
You don’t say what graphics card you are using. With many cards the fans are not even visible as they are on the under-side of the card….so it is easy to miss them when cleaning.
I would reinstall/update the graphics driver.
The reason a restart ‘fixes’ some issues is that on restart the cache is cleared down….which does not occur when you just power off and on. In the latter case it saves all your settings for ‘quick restart’. You could try disabling quick restart….the PC would take a little longer to boot up but you would not get the cache issues.
While I appreciate the attempts to help, none of you read my post….
The equipment and everything else said above is irrelevant to the issue - the computer doesn’t run hot until EVE starts up - it then runs hot….THE FIRST TIME!
HOWEVER, when I immediately stop EVE and start EVE up again the 2nd time, the computer runs cool
I repeat, when EVE starts up the 2nd time, the computer runs cool from then on…..
Right, if everything is irrelevant in your opinion, then i deem my efforts to help you irrelevant as well. Final hints: Without going through technical causes and settings, you will not change the behavior of your technical machine. Next up i would have asked which temperature it is anyway. that you talk about. GPU or CPU? If the GPU was at the right settings then Cpu Core Affinity of your EVE instances could be the next problem.
83c is more or less thermal throttling temp on modern cards.
You can generally expect to run a “stock” GPU without any questionable OC decisions under full load at well under that temp. The (pretty dusty, actually) 3070 I have in this box never crests above 65 under a stress test.
83 means you are not dissipating heat effectively. Probably the heat sink isn’t in contact with the chip anymore, or the interface compound has turned to dust.
His snotty thing about running the game the first or second time is a red herring because your GPU simply will not reach that temp if it is working correctly.
Check the GPU’s Software for Power usage - e.g. Nvidia has a control panel, some have options to overclock the CPU, which can overheat it.
Try the CTRL+Shift+F9 to see if the game is really causing stress. This will toggle off the 3D while leaving the 2D UI viewable. Play with the 3D toggled off to see, if the GPU runs hot.

Placement of your CPU box can affect temps. Never place it on the floor with a rug, The fans will act like a vacuum sucking up lint, fibers, hair, and dust.
Old thermal paste not conducting heat to sinks and fans is a very likely to overheat. A tube of paste is like 30 cents to a dollar at most. If it were my GPU, I would dig through my heatsinks here, and replace it with a larger one.
Bad fan? It could be spinning but not fast as it should to pull the heat from the heatsink.
Remember it is not about cooling down but heat extraction. Air condition works by extracting the heat from the room and tossing it out the window. PC fans and heat sinks work the same way, by conduction of the heat to another place and blasting it out the machine.
Best of luck, but it may be time to search for a new graphics card.
The fact is that right now, after I brought up both toons (temp 83), took them down and brought them up again - GPU is running 60C.
It will run like that the rest of the day (in fact, I only take my machines down when I reboot in the morning) - that tells me there’s nothing wrong with the GPU card (it’s fairly new anyway). There’s nothing wrong with the fans or the other equipment or the settings - it’s running cool at 60.
That only leaves one thing - something is going on with the EVE software the first time I bring the 2 toons up (which is always after I reboot the machine). And whatever that is, it goes away when I take both toons down and bring them back up. If I don’t do that, it will continue to run at 83.
I appreciate your comments! - I believe it’s something to do with EVE software - ofc that’s impossible since according to the devs EVE is perfect…which is why it’s useless to make a ticket on this.
It’s not that they’re perfect, it’s that there is really nothing client software can do to overheat a correctly functioning GPU.
The most the game software can do is cause it to run at maximum load. The card is designed to run at maximum load and to dissipate the heat from that.
At the temp you are reporting, your GPU is likely throttling itself down to prevent damaging itself.
I can’t really recall any cases where “Game makes GPU overheat” has ever turned out to be anything except a cooling failure or GPU defect (e.g., New World cooking 3090s), and I’m including the Incarna release in that statement for whoever is probably about to mention that.
