What did I do wrong? (T0 Abyssal + Caracal = Boom)

Hi all! I’ve played Eve on and off since 2003. Decided to come back and take a look. This is my first time in Abysall Space. I went to a Tier 0 area and took in a Caracal with the fit recommended here: Surviving the Abyss - Abyssal Deadspace Ship Fittings and Guidance | EVE Online

However, my ship did very little damage to the hostiles. It took so long to kill anything that eventually the 20 min timer ran out.

Previously, I did the Tier 0 in a Catalyst, and could complete them in around 10 minutes. I thought the Cruiser was going to be even quicker.

Can anyone let me know what I did wrong?

Video clip of the fight is here: Eve Online Abyss - YouTube

Thanks!

looks like that’s not taking implants into the equation, plus it could be skill issues as well.

This is a fresh account so only has ~600k SP and no implants. Was I trying to run before I can walk?

quite possibly… i’m not an expert of abyssal.

Warhead Upgrade would have helped as well as getting bombardment up a lil bit more…

Was it skybreaker that killed you?

No. The problem was that my Caracal just wasn’t dealing enough damage.

Wasn’t there deviant automata suppressor eating your missiles in flight?

pretty sure u cant kill the skybreaker with like 130 dps trust me i have 5 dead coraxes as proof

Website you linked was put up when abyss was introduced. CCP didn’t updated it. You will find better fits using community fittings in, in game fitting window.

One big mistake was taking firestorm filament. It gives bonus to armor but since you use shield based ship. You end up with more tanky enemies (filament environment bonusses and “nerfs” also apply to npcs) and no benefits for yourself.

Other than that, it’s simply not enough DPS. You need more SP and more T2/meta modules. For new account. It’s actually easier to run T0 frigate or destroyer abyss before upgrading into cruiser. Income is also higher.

That fit has heavy missiles that jhave crappy application to small targets. Try using rapid light missiles instead as t0 is all small stuff

Killed the skybreaker with 99dps Merlin in a Gamma Afterglow however I had 1min left after it.

So yes you can kill it with 100+ dps

Just not fast enough xD.

Nice video, what program did you use?

Your problem is most likely that you are using Heavy Assault Missiles. They do not apply well to small targets (I.E. have high explosion radius).
Even if your fit shows some 150-200 dps you should be applying less than 20% of that to small targets like frigates.
You can fix this to some extent with skills (Guided Missile Precision, Target Navigation Prediction) and with faction missiles (i think? not sure). For now your best bet is to switch your weapons to Rapid Light Missiles as @Lesican suggested.

Hello!
You can watch this video that we created with caracal,
This one dish out more damage and cap stable so you wont be having much trouble surviving with this one.

Please do check this one if you have time:
Caracal Complete Guide for new players

My 7 of my friends used it for the same purpose and they told me the fit works without problem for them.
Also i note that your enemies are small frigates in which light missiles and small guns perform better than heavies and assault ammo.

so please consider tryout our fit

video also contains the recommended skills to properly fly this fit and alternative fittings that you can try.

Hope this will help.

I know it’s an expansive ship, I want to try T1 ships for Abyssal runs and make some vids of how it goes.
anything below 300 DPS is gonna hurt in the Abyss. Try to breach that point.
It’s possible below 300 DPS but very risky. Check out my vids for the Abyss. Abyss Mutaplasmids modules - Omega only, will help you out a lot.

Also check your missiles explosion radius, frigates are fast, if they are in white cloud they are impossible to hit, you need small explosion radius, use of navy missiles is mandatory in most of situations.
fit a rigor rig or use a missile computer helps a lot also keeping explosion radius low.

Also use Rapid light missiles on the Caracal… you were using standard light launchers…

Can you fit this? What is your DPS and Explosion radius?
I get 350 DPS and 25mt explosion radius with CN missiles and
450 DPS with Fury Missiles and 45mt radius
If you can get at least 300 DPS, I think you are good to go.
This Suicide fit could go perhaps up to T3…
