I’ve liked this event so far. First night up I guess fellow angels were tracking these down. And empire fw and non affiliated pirates tracking them down too.
Some angel sites not blobbed give nice payout. The mining ops one pays real nice with only say 6 people in it.
I logged in, opened the Agency for the event, checked out the rewards and decided it wasn’t worth the time to do it.
I use to love doing events. They were fun and exciting. CCP has now turned them into nothing more than a grind fest giving little rewards for lot’s of risk.
For the first 48 hours they had decent returns, but most of the loot is worthless now… (particularly the SKINs). There’s no Mac version of Vanguard, so I’ll just have to watch YouTube videos…
Ok, don’t think that changed, but too many skins are dropping. The only stuff worth looking at are the overseers, other ISK worth tokens, the boosters and accelerators. Rarely you get faction module drops.
I’m literally (no exaggeration) seeing 1-2 SKIN drops per combat site. You’d have to run a half dozen sites to get one lucky SKIN drop in the past. I’ve gotten about a half dozen faction module drops (most are the really low-end hardeners, though).
I legitimately feel bad for any players who were somehow convinced they could run these in anything but a Marauder and hope to compete with everyone else. These Praxis fits running around just make me shake my head…
CCP has done many rewards lately via: events, logging window and store discounts. Just keep in mind that now is Christmas holiday - it’s time for giveaways not takings and gainings (“based on lore”). Therefore, these event sites are more like some sort of easy and funky holiday games. The only problem, in my opinion, is the competition which is just too high due to how they are binded to the storms or locations. As a result it turns into very camped event sites in null and low sec and very high competition for some hi-sec sites via multiboxing and very expensive ships under perfect skills (I noticed how fast somebody is scanning those lvl4 data sites). As a result nobody wants to risk an expensive ship while gaining almost nothing.
About timing. Since long long time ago these events are working next order:
First day. The loot is just absolutely broken, especially for all lowsec sites. And if the drop is below 100m ISK, nobody THERE is interested in that stuff. First day is “cherry picking time”. With a good and organized grind, you can farm more than anybody can during the remaining 30 days of the event.
Next one or two days. After DT we see some big nerfs in loot drops and event mechanics. But the loot is still good enough.
Next 90% of the time. Even bigger nerfs. Almost nobody is doing the event in null and low sec. In hi-sec there’s an interest by hardcore nerd grinders and players out of competition.
TBH I pretty much gave up on the “new improved” event style well over a year ago. I’m not saying they’re not profitable or worthwhile for people willing to do what it takes to farm them - just that they’re no longer interesting to me. For exactly the reasons you (and others) state: the events are too much grind for (in general) too little benefit, and the sites are rigged towards fairly specific ship/build types.
Like you, I used to look forward to and enjoy the older style events we had from (if memory serves) around the 2012-2016 years. You used to be able to use your fairly regular ship builds to pop into sites and duke it out with NPCs, thieves, trolls and gankers and see who could make it out with the reward crate.
I imagine CCP’s got some new system of evaluating “player engagement metrics” that reassures them their current path is the best one. But I notice that player counts were quite a bit higher back in the days when events and other parts of the game were still focused on fun and excitement, and less focused on daily login metrics.
Nonsense. A couple of times the loot drop on day one was unintentionally high (too many faction modules), so it was corrected later. You all look at the price estimation of your grab in hangar instead of the real market prices in Jita with your favorite appraisal tool. The skin prices are fantasy, and the booster prices go down in value over the course of the event, as you would expect. They are even not included in your hangar estimation until a couple days into the event.
I know that because I was doing almost every event in the last years, and I’m paying attention to the chances. There was only one single “stealth nerf” later on in an event with an item, dropping in wh sites, which could make you rich fast (I think it was about ~500M per hacking site, and more with combat). I don’t remember the details but when called out, CCP admitted the change to avoid flooding the market with a new thing (something with mining, because you had to get the stuff in Outer ring).
For everybody reading, doing events is still single-handedly the easiest and often fun way to make a lot of ISK beside market and industry.
