Would a way to mark ourselves as AFK be good?

I’m about to head to lunch, but I don’t want to log out and lose my scanning progress. Just thinking how it’d be nice to mark ourselves as AFK in-game. Is this already a thing possibly or would it somehow be abused? Even if it was just to corp-mates and friends.

This is EVE; expect anything that can be used in game to be abused somehow. Also, what would be the point to marking yourself afk?

That I’ve stepped away, not active.

Okay actually going afk now.

If you are in corp, you should use third party software to communicate. Mark your status there.

No one, really, no one in game cares if you are at keyboard or not. Unless they want to destroy your ship. And marking yourself afk in space is death wish. In station it is pointless anyway.

“Hey guys, I’m AFK, don’t worry.”

Actively hunts and kills the person dumb enough to believe the AFK flag.

Don’t give any mind to the less courteous responses. There’s an active delusion that you need to be rude to get your point across, especially when you don’t agree with someone.

If I understand what you are saying, you think it would be convenient to be able to inform your corp mates and friends that you are AFK, so they don’t try to actively contact you?

I can see how that might be useful, it’s present in many other MMOs. It could definitely be used as intel against you, but no more than 3rd party programs could either. It comes down who has access to your “AFK” status. I would think it similar to the current online/offline status for in-game buddies.

There’s a conviction among many players (and CCP I’m told) that if 3rd party tools can do something, then the players should use those instead. I don’t always agree with this is, but that’s the argument most people make. It falls flat on its face when you point to the things which CCP implemented that were already found in 3rd party tools.

So all that to say, if the “AFK” feature was restricted to buddies, then why not? I would find it useful sometimes, and it could provide opportunities for backstabbers. Is it worth the time and effort to put into the game? Maybe?

A downright psychopathic informational warfare/counter-intelligence tool.

I love it.

Thanks, it is a plague on our community I agree. This was such a low hanging fruit too, be better forum trolls! Get good!

I try to not be online when I’m not playing so it’s like when I’m on, I’m actively here and playing the game. With how scanning is, where you log out and you lose all you’ve scanned, I’ve got a reason to walk away for 30 minutes-couple hours and leave my game running.

I understand and know there are things like Tripwire and stuff but if we can’t mark ourselves AFK, why do we have to probe all over again when we log out and back in? I think it’d be a nifty quality of life feature

That’s how you know if they were REALLY AFK or not, whether they fight back :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You have bookmarks. And you probably don’t remember times when results where lost when you jumped out of system.

Anyway, you have many ways to inform your friends that you are away. There is no need to waste dev time on feature that only part of player base will use.

Hey, who wants me to hilariously derail this thread and get it locked in like 30 posts? Watch this:

THE AFK FLAG SHOULD BE AUTOMATIC, AND ANYONE WHO IS AFK FOR MORE THAN 30 MINUTES NEEDS TO HAVE ALL OF THEIR MODULES DEACTIVATED AUTOMATICALLY BY THE GAME AS WELL! IT’S TIME TO DRAIN THE SWAMP OF ALL AFK-CLOAKING SCUM! BRING BACK JOBS TO HONEST, HARD-WORKING NULL-SEC INDUSTRIALISTS! THE ECONOMY CAN’T FUNCTION WITHOUT THEM!

I think they have a dev that does nothing else other than UI/QoL fixes.

You need more personal attacks and insults - maybe make it about Brexit or Donald Trump

One moment, I will edit…

This would be awesome! Once, because even if I am AFK, most of the time I still do things like occasionally look on D-scan, writing EVE-mails or trying out fits in the in-game simulator, so the game wouldn’t mark me as AFK and others would be scared away to go hunt easier prey.

Twice, because if I’m the one hunting, I’d really like if easy targets would come with a huge “please kill me”-sign.
