I don’t know, I’ve been having this Chinese guy, apparently from Microsoft, calling me for years now insisting my computer is the root of all malware in the world. Maybe I should have done as he’d told me and not hung up on him. Maybe I’m to blame for all this…if so I’m really sorry guys.

Actually MSDOS was far worse than that. It came with a debugger tool which gave full low level access to the OS and the machine essentially allowing the user to do whatever he or she wanted. But that was not uncommon for the OS back on those days when Assembly was the dominant language.
Of course back then it was highly unlikely that the computer would have access to sensitive data like credit card numbers etc. So security was not the big deal it is nowdays.
just remember to send him a ‘screenshot’ of the error messages you are seeing… they love opening attachments from ‘victims’ 
Oh I recall. I remember we used to UUENCODE small utilities and literally TYPE THEM IN by hand on systems we needed them on due to the complete lack of useful networking.
