20220225 - Connection Issues (UK)

EVE Online is very frugal when it comes to bandwidth requirements but can be sensitive to packet loss, latency spikes, over-capacity spikes, and BGP flapping. It needs a stable TCP/IP connection, which is why we have always invested in good networking equipment and partner with companies such as Cloudflare.

EDIT: Virgin Media UK did provide such a stable TCP/IP connection until 22 o’clock on 23 February

but then something happened.

Per my reply above:

While it is very curious to send all-UK network traffic to Amsterdam then it is not necessarily the root cause of the issue. But to even begin trying to diagnose a cryptic issue such as this one then one should remove all noise and in this case the simplest first step is to hand the traffic over to Cloudflare in the UK.

Indeed; I find it a bit curious that Virgin Media doesn’t peer directly with Cloudflare in the UK (as I know other UK-based ISPs do) but there could be reasons. What I do find curious is to bounce the traffic to Amsterdam and hand it there over to Telia, instead of handing it over to Telia in the UK (as Telia peers with Cloudflare both in the UK and in the Netherlands).

not a networking person, just thinking differently here… maybe they assume the traffic would be better if they took the proverbial backroads than taking the highway?

exactly the same here with me not one other game but eve i will do the above when i get home later

Just wondering if VM have been in contact or are actively in contact with CCP to try and resolve this issue? Unfortunately, VM are radio silence on their forums right now. Thanks again for putting in so much effort to try help this get resolved, really appreciate it!

I will file a support ticket but just wanted to mention I’m from Chile in South America, and haven’t been able to connect to eve for about a week, lately the website itself has been showing connection errors. So something is happening that is affecting all ports.

The particular issue in this thread is for Virgin Media customers in the UK, your issue altthough maybe similiar is not covered under the scope of this thread

I explained to VM that there is a routing issue and they repeatedly ignored teh fact and said theres an issue with the hardware that they supplied and are sending an engineer around and charging me for the pleassure, even though I stated everything else is working fine, even though they are actively streaming when eve disconnects and gave them the ticket relating to this issue they say that that ticket does not relate to the Eve Disconnects that I am experiencing.
If they replace the hardware and charge for that replacement we are likely to go elsewhere

I believe there was an issue in the past that required users to upgrade to a newer hub due to connection issues.
Do we have anyone suffering from this issue in this thread who are on the very latest hub, maybe someone who recently had virgin installed? Would be good to confirm if people on the latest equipment still have this same problem or not.

I only joined VM a few months ago, so unless a new hub has been released since then, I should be on the latest, and I’m getting disconnects the same as others.

Thanks Sadie. Seems very unlikely then that older hubs are the issue here. Are you part of the thread on the VM forums? If so it might be worth posting on there with your Hub version to make them aware that this issue isn’t only on older equipment.

Just a quick confirmation that we’ve had in the past issues with older Virgin Media hubs. Those issues should be known to Virgin Media and be resolved by now; and also would not explain these synchronous disconnects we see from the UK. Also a quick confirmation that customers of other ISPs in the UK are not complaining to us, only Virgin Media UK customers.

Yes, we are also working on issues in America, mostly Chile and Mexico. The symptoms there are very different since affected players there are not able to connect at all.

We have been able to reproduce this from one VPN point in Mexico. Based on the analysis so far of that failure then the response from TQ during the initial handshake is all garbled and so we suspect some sort of bad filtering.

If they replace your hardware and everything starts working again, I would love to hear about it.

Has there been any sign of improvement in terms of the frequency of these disconnects CCP Explorer? Obviously we can’t be logged on all the time so its hard to know. The number of people being disconnected is probably dropping as more people are using VPNs, but just wondered if there was any change in the frequency at all.
Unfortunately even if the frequency drops it still makes playing the game extremely difficult while it is still happening at all.

Hi All.

I have been monitoring this thread waiting to see if I can actually contribute anything or not and think I can now.

I am on Virgin Media M500 package with the latest modem which is running in modem only mode and I am hardwired to a TP Link Archer AX6000 Wifi 6 Router.

That being said I have indeed experienced the constant D/C experienced on this thread, mostly if not always appearing when I try to do something outside, when docked seems stable. This is the same for all 4 accounts I logged and tried it on.

So think we can eliminate hardware being the issue, at least for me anyways.

I do have access to SurfShark VPN however I really do not play that much these days so could not really provide any routing information however could provide if really required.

That being said I just logged in now and managed to belt rat on all 4 accounts for the SP with no disconnect at all.

Hope this helps,

Matt.

Even if this issue is specific to VM users in the UK and they may be the ones where it is most clearly visible, other players are having issues that look 100% identical to this:
-frequent but unpredictable disconnects from EVE
-otherwise totally stable connection
-can always immediately reconnect to EVE
-using VPN resolves the issue
-many different people affected at the same time (you know just by looking at the PCU graph where you see often very small but still unmistakable drops)

I’m on Deutsche Telekom in Germany. Vodafone customers in Germany have also been affected. It’s not nearly as frequent as it has been described here, but every disconnect can mean a multibillion ship loss for me which CCP refuses to reimburse.

So whatever Virgin Media UK are doing wrong, it’s not just them. Or maybe Cloudflare are not actually blameless here.

My thoughts exactly been loads of others not just UK Virgin Media users having this issue. I’m sorry but if this was purely to do with specific ISP’s having issues I would be experiencing something similar on other games. I would think it’ time to look a little bit closer to home CCP   I’ve never had this issue outside of 3 days ago when the friendship event came in.

I have seen somehting similar. it mostly stable when you are docked (not always) but its stabler than trying to do things in game undocked
