Activity Tracker and Portrait Background Unlocks

DEV time is precious, this idea isn’t worth the expenditure of that precious commodity. We need REAL content not gimmicks.

The devs have already put in the work. Activity tracker is inbound and comes with a rewards feature for accumulating points in categories. You can look at the test server files.

Connecting rewards to portrait backgrounds (not necessarily locking off existing ones, but introducing new ones) enhances individual players to express their identity in Eve more widely than skins can. Eve devs have also expressed that it is much quicker to crank out portrait backgrounds because the art team doesn’t need to go through the same QA process when developing things like ship skins.

Is your issue also with the activity tracker in general? I figured stat porn is a foundational aspect to Eve.

CCP sometimes makes disappointingly bad decisions.

Is there substance to your argument against CCP sharing more data points with players?

Im not sure how else to say it, i think it will waste DEV time and continue to do so as they add more and more additions to the concept. I think it is gimmicky and counter to EVEs culture.

It is obvious to me that you feel otherwise but asking me to explain repeatedly why i think it is a poor idea won’t change your mind nor mine.

I’m not the one building the activity tracker feature. It’s the developers you need to convince. If you made a post already please link it.

I figured you would have at least argued that the data points are best left to 3rd party developers to create apps with (freeing up ‘precious’ dev time on an in-game viewer). Instead, you go in with, “I think it is gimmicky and counter to EVEs culture.” That’s incredibly subjective and merits at least a little unpacking, right?

No, proper argumentative form states that in EVERY case a person is entitled to an opinion, it need not be supported and cannot be contended.

Well that’s just silly. Go on doing your thing.

List of random little things to track mostly dealing with corporations:

ISK amount paid into ship insurance
ISK amount received from insurance claims
Number of corporation votes called
Number of corporation votes participated
Number of times elected CEO by corp vote
Number of days with the title auditor, director, CEO, etc.
Number of corporation applications accepted
Number of corporations founded
Amount of ISK given to player corporations
Amount of ISK taken from corporation wallets

effectively you are making more work for the art department but putting achievements in eve with cosmetics as their reward?

i think player retention might just go up?

The art department doesn’t necessarily need to handle it. Portrait backgrounds are far easier than sharing in-studio SKIN tech to outsource work to another studio/freelancer or even the player base with a design contest.

I’d be super onboard for having new backgrounds as unlockables for hitting certain milestones - not with locking any that already exist though :stuck_out_tongue: I’d be sad about having to do things we’ve already done in order to gain a background, though - it’d be nice to have some like “killed x drifters” to get a Drifter bg or “ran x chaotic abyssal sites” for another.

rather than just using whatever background you like best why don’t we make players grind activities they have no interest in if they want to use it?

So they can spend real-life money on getting them without grinding.

They did something similar with the faction warfare suit SKINs in Dust 514. Cash store vs one earned from in-game faction credits looked the same, but the store bought one had a prefix in front of its display name to let everyone know you bought it from the store rather than ‘earning’ it in battle.

I’m not feeling that it would work here.

That’s actually a good solution. Was the prefix by any chance “wallet edition” or something? :joy:

And agreed not sure how this could work in EVE Online as you can not differentiate between profile items so they either look different which kind of defeats the purpose or have to implement a UI feature to can e.g. hover parts of a profile pic to see what they are and what version they are… which might be a direction with Pearl Abyss at the helm but in general not really feasible, furthermore most people wouldn’t even bother to check the version of a profile item I think.

But we’ll see, new winds are blowing so who knows what lies ahead.

Latest iteration of the activity tracker is a mastery level system whereby you earn points in each node to build mastery levels 1 to 5. There are currently no rewards tied to mastery. Awarding a portrait background at mastery 5 would be one thing the feature developers should consider implementing.

There is only one thing in the New EVE that is going to unlock art and the is $$$$.

No way PA spends developer dollars to create a system to give away what they can sell for dollars.

Always the cynic. Sure, they are welcome to sell more cosmetics. They can also extract great value from players by giving them incentivized goalposts to grind toward with in-game activity.
