Don’t be so starry eyed.
Also if they were going to do something special to display accomplishments, it should probably start with faction ranks.

Possibly. A dwindling pool of whales can only take a game so far. Developing tools that foster feelings of personal progression and communal competition can bring in new blood and keep old blood flowing. Tools like Zkill are a net positive in my (starry) eyes.
Portrait backgrounds are a potential reward (and micro-transaction avenue) with far more visibility (forums, killboards, fanfest lanyard buttons, etc) than ship skins or in-game medals. Players (in general) are likely far more eager to show achievements via portrait backgrounds they’ve earned or participated in-game compared to bought with RL money, however if a paid portrait background looks badass those folks won’t mind.
That’s a lot of nodes to track–just in manufacturing.
If CCP did decide to offer rewards they could start with awarding six character portrait backgrounds (5 central category nodes and 1 character node) when mastery five is unlocked; branching out to parent and child nodes from then on as development budget allows.
Yes, starting with core nodes is sensible. Would it be possible to create a portrait background that gives larger faux cat ears? This Upwell background comes close yet they are just pointy bits.
