I don’t think this will be the case, at least not yet. I don’t know if CCP is aware of it, but these packs do serve to catch new players up to old players in one key performance metric: Sunk Costs.
Old players are unwilling to quit even if only because they’ve invested so much of their time or money into developing what they have. For new players, you’re not going to be able to affect the time component except to wait, but you can get people to quickly invest their money and the first rule of acquisition clearly states: Once you have their money, never give it back. It’s gone.
The goal isn’t to make a fun game. At least not in so far as I am able to see. There are no grand designs, direction, goals or ideals being put forth that relate to the game and how they envision people having fun in it.
The goal is to make a game that people will tolerate once they’re invested. People will raise their voice and complain when things change, but they’ll continue to tolerate it. People come back to complain over and over again, but they keep coming back and that’s all that matters to the bottom line.
The real issue with the OP is that it offers you nothing you can do except whine and continue to pay your subscription. There is really no actionable alternative that has any consequence for CCP. People (understandably) do not want to undermine the game they’re invested in.
I don’t think that posts like this and expressed outrage are completely useless, but I don’t think they do much more than delay while CCP finds ways to make changes more subtle, or waits for the rage to wear off. As long as the metrics, or ‘data’, if you prefer, looks good, CCP will keep doing what it’s doing and do more of it because if a little is good, then more must be better.
I don’t want to go so far as to call people a hypocrite for not speaking up sooner, but I agree with Daichi to a degree. The game I played was compromised long before this, and I don’t expect this to be a trend that ever stops and I don’t want to sink cost into a thing that doesn’t have an expected future return. For most, though, I think they will continue to tolerate it as long as the change is gradual enough and CCP knows it.
