Tips for Contacting CCP Games

  • Be Professional and Concise: Clearly state the purpose of your inquiry in the subject line (e.g., “Book Publishing Proposal - [Your Book Title]”).

  • Prepare a Pitch: Include a brief, compelling summary of your book idea, its relevance to the EVE universe (if applicable), and your publishing credentials in your initial email.

  • Understand IP: Be aware that CCP Games holds the copyright to their intellectual property, such as EVE Online lore and logos, and any use would require their explicit permission and licensing agreement

thanks! I used the general inbox, I will try this one. Thanks

A little advice:

Unless your work is insanely good and strictly inline with in-universe canon, you’re almost certain to be rejected. Even if accepted, you will not be allowed to publish the work directly. You will have to sell the rights to CCP and they will produce it through the publisher of their choice, edited by the editor of their choice. You would most likely receive royalties in line with industry standards (i.e., pitiful. 12.5% net on pb/hc, 25% net on eb). If you really want to go this route, you should be trying to negotiate a sale, not a licensing agreement. And unless you have a literary agent, or are one, you’re likely to get screwed in the deal.

Instead, what I’d recommend is that you change the setting and names enough to make your novel an original work/original universe that you own. This is not hard. Look at how many books have been trad and indie published that are nothing but thinly veiled ReyLo fanfic, Twilight fanfic, etc.

If you go the latter route, you can indie publish on your own schedule without having to obtain licensing. You’ll have full creative control, and you’ll receive higher royalties (i.e., 60% net on pb/hc and 70% net on eb). Just for changing some names and descriptions.

Thanks, that is actually great advice, I had a gut feeling that something like this is likely to happen. I was mostly curious to why not so many books have been published in the EVE universe, while too many people just enjoy writing about the Lore. Maybe that is why. Thanks for the advice, I will give CCP a chance to do this right and see how this goes, if that doesn’t work out, as you said, I will swap things over to set my own universe and see how it goes. Thanks again for the much appreciated advice.

No problem. Good luck with your project!

For future questions like this, it’s a no no from CCP. They basically don’t want people writing books in the universe even if they publish it for free. No scenario where that is possible. So yeh, bummer

Wow, ok, well guess you’ll have to go with @Hatch_Nasty and what he suggested

Trust me, you’re better off doing your own thing. You’ll have full creative control, so if your novel has series potential, you’re free to pursue it without CCP’s involvement. And you want to do that, because series are where authors make their money. Also, branding your novel as more general sci-fi will open it up to a wider audience than just EVE players. CCP may have done some marketing work if you sold it to them, which you’ll now have to do yourself, but let’s face it… CCP kinda sucks at marketing anyway.

Besides, would you rather make $0.33 or $6.79 on a $18.99 paperback? $0.86 or $3.45 on a $4.99 ebook?

To be honest the only regret here is that I really had a great storyline line for the EVE universe. But I do agree with you about publishing and my brain is already transforming what is already written into another universe. I find it a shame for CCP to deal with it this way but I see it as an opportunity, as you said, continuity is what make sense. I will keep on writing and let’s see how it goes. Thanks again for all the advice. Have you written anything yourself?

Yes, I’ve written a few novels (none in the EVE universe).

not sure if you can share here, but if you are happy to share, I could use some reading

No, sorry. I can’t.
