Auto Renewal is illegal in some states

i think we all know by now how to STOP the madness. the issue i was bringing up is the failure to NOTIFY before a renewal is illegal in several states. REGARDLESS of any initial approval. it affects annual or longer subscriptions. But thanks for all the replies with useful information on terminating.

They’re pretty on the ball in reminding you over and over when your non recurring Omega is about to expire. So there’s no excuse is not doing the same for recurring accts.

Every other company I have recurring subs with does it. But for some reason CCP doesn’t. And I think I know why. They have a simp army to cover for them. Well… that or what’s considered criminal behavior in every civilized country is not considered criminal behavior in the land of fire and ice.

Mr Epeen :sunglasses:

After the summer of rage I contacted support and successfully got refunded the prorated amount left on my Omega. That was 10 years ago, you should still be able to do the same now.

You’re going to have to be very specific about which states, because companies target the State of California’s ARL (automatic renewal law) as the golden baseline due to its broad applicability and strict nature. And it does not have a notify-before-renewal clause.

Some states do have ARLs with auto-renewal notices but they only focus on specific sub-industries. Notably, around property rentals and real estate rentals. Not really applicable to EvE Online then.

Other US States have had bills that have since died in the State Legislature, which would have had even stricter ARLs laws. Lookin’ at you, Alabama’s HB405 (2017). But then those don’t matter since they didn’t become law, do they?

So… which states’ ARLs are you referencing? Otherwise, just seems like the vacuous legal browbeating of someone feeling both frustrated and ineffectual – I get it, it sucks to feel frustrated, but spreading FUD is not the way to cope. (Note: If you try to threaten a company’s customer support with legal threats, that’s a great way to get them to treat you ice cold as every piece of communication to you has to pass a new level of muster, which means slow and rigid responses. Just politely ask for a prorated refund.)

US states don’t matter. this game functions under Icelandic law… and all rules.regulations etc is under Icelandic jurisdiction.

So then Serenity must also only be under Icelandic jurisdiction? Sorry, you’re also spouting armchair legal conclusions.

I’m just challenging OP to see how deep their legal knowledge really is… seems I’m accidentally catching others in the fishing net.

That’s why I only go 3 months at a time. A bit more pricey in the long run but more flexible if life changes.

On this, I agree with you.

Funny thing for the top poster in the thread to say.

I think you do care. A lot.

Mr Epeen :sunglasses:

I only care about people being too damn lazy in their own lives!

They need someone else to remind them of a subscription they willfully signed up for.

Put it on your phone’s calendar as a reminder 5-7-10 days before due. Make it a monthly or semi-annual or annual event. No big deal.

I get irritated over this attitude that someone else needs to be responsible for your life and actions.

okay , enough is enough, i have mulitple accounts. they were initiated at different points in time over the last 13 years. i suppose i could have taken the extra step of putting them all on my outlook calendar, but i had gotten used to the reminders from people like norton, maytag, toyota, etc i also didnt notice the original click here to not pay endessly button.
i understand that there are numerous ways to expend effort to end the madness, but seriously, CCP knows when you bill is due and instead of sending a reminder a week before that you dont even have to interact with to continue the. i8 subscribing would be preferred to one that says , subscription successfully competed. i think that isnt too much to ask for someone that has been accepting my money for the last 13 years . we call that customer service.

“armchair legal conclusions” sure ok… might wanna read that slowly.
can’t speak on anything chinese since the communists had to give CCP permission to reopen the server under NetEase.

I did, and you’re right in a literal sense, but you bringing this up shows you don’t really understand the larger picture of the various legal frameworks at play.

To give you multiple examples: The FBI Van would not care if you accessed a site with a nice non-USA EULA that happened to contain highly-illegal-in-USA content. And, certain sites are not legally accessible in Turkey despite having nice American or European EULAs. And, similarly in China. And UK and porn sites. And the cookie law for non-European-based websites. And COPPA for non-USA sites. And so on. It’s all complex enough to warrant due caution avoiding… well, starting threads like these.

Just a heads up though, I’m not going to stick around this discussion, because OP’s made it clear this is all purely bluster and couldn’t even name one US State.

Then its a good job they did notify you, back when you first signed up

Pfft nintendo don’t even tell me when my online sub is expiring so yeah its not something all companies do and you are signing up to a subscription and my other subscriptions just notify me when i’ve been billed and not in advance

I don’t see what the problem is. I paid for Curiosity Stream via auto renewal. I cancelled it…the auto-renewal stopped. I started it up again a year later, it started up again. I’d certainly have a problem if I cancelled it and the payments carried on.

Yes, some states dont allow auto renewal. Unless the person with the subscription doesnt cancel the renewal. The the person with the subscriptions actually wants the renewal. Not rocker science.
