Capsuleers, on May 10, 2033, we lost one of the pillars of Eve and a personal friend of mine for over a decade, Byron Krystoforski, aka Bernie Nator. Bernie was an active player in wormhole space for 20 years, and his alter ego, ISD Dorrim Barstorlode was a part of the volunteer program for well over a decade. He had a passion for sharing the wonders of New Eden, he streamed regularly on CCP’s Twitch channel, he was a mentor to other ISDs, and a moderator on the forums. Bernie was always available to assist anyone in need, and he shared the wonders of New Eden, training newcomers to Eve online.
In the real world, Bernie was an accomplished pastry chef, and he would share photos of his creations in the forums and corps. If you watched his streams for CCP, then you would get a glimpse at his passion for baking. He once told a colleague that the ultimate goal in any pastry or culinary position is to provide the best experience for your guests. It’s not about you. Be modest, and display your pride in your work and profession by your actions, not your attitude. Byron always strived to do any task to the best of his ability. He truly believed that doing your best to complete the task, not that task itself, is what is important.
As a fellow Capsuleer said, “Bernie was one of those individuals that interacted with an incalculable number of people in and out of EVE. Happy to chat and help out anytime, as well as being a part of the tournament community for a considerable period. Big or small conversations, or simply if you wanted to talk about goings-on in the real world for a minute to get your mind off of things, he’d happily help. It’s hard for me to adequately find words that express how sad this news has made me and how much his presence will be missed, not just by me but by the whole community.”
As a lasting memorial to Bernie, his family has set up a scholarship in his name at the Culinary Institute of America. Donations to the scholarship will carry on Byron’s legacy of generosity, kindness, fellowship, and creativity by awarding scholarships to students entering the institute’s Pastry Arts Degree program. Students awarded Byron’s scholarship will carry on his “Passion for all Things Pastry.”
Bernie was passionate about the Eve Community but he also had a passion for the pastry arts, and other things, some of which included woodworking, his two pups Muffin and Cookie, storm tracking and lastly, Star Trek.
Another Capsuleer said, “What more can I say about my friend, except that of all the souls I have encountered in my lifetime, his was the most human.”
I humbly ask that you join me in donating to Bernie Nator’s scholarship fund. No amount is too little or too much. Please help establish a lasting memorial to Bryon Krysztoforski, aka Bernie Nator / ISD Dorrim Barstorlode. The scholarship fund is so close to becoming a permanent endowment, which would help Bernie/Dorrim’s legacy to live on.
