If you get offended by someone who wants to offend you, the problem is especially on your end.
Interesting quote.
What does it meant to ‘be offended’?
If someone intentionally attempts to offend me it definitely has an impact on me: at the very least it would severely diminish my opinion of that person. Does this change in my opinion mean I am offended?
You can change your opinion based on your experience with that person, that doesn’t mean you are offended.
Being offended means that you give him the power (make you) to feel bad, angry or hateful towards him. If you just shrug and think “what an asshole” and go your way, you aren’t nessessarily “offended”.
The difference is: did he successfully hit your emotions and disabled your logic an reason or did he miss and you used your brain instead?
Then with that in mind I agree it’s a good quote.
That aside, if someone intentionally attempts to offend others, they are still the problem. The receiver too can make it a second problem by feeling bad or responding in an angry or hateful way, but that merely means you then have two persons with problems.
Regardless of the receiver, there still is a problem at the sending end when someone intentionally attempts to offend others.
Yeah, but then we aren’t talking about jokes any more. Thats just insulting and he deserves a - non offended - slap in the face to get grounded again.
Some people hide their offense as ‘jokes’ though.
These people then ask questions like ‘Can people deal with jokes more or less through generations?’ when people have gotten offended by one of their jokes. No offense.
When in doubt, stupidity is more likely than malice. If you believe someones “joke” to be a “hidden insult”, that choice is still yours. You could just shrug and let it be. So we are back at step one. The problem is on your end. Just let go.
The highest level of enlightenment in Buddhism is Serenity. If you can’t let go, you have room for improvement still. Solve your own problems first. There is no need to look for problems with other people.
That is true, but you’re still only looking at it from the viewpoint of the receiver.
From an external general point of view, if such a thing would exist, or from the point of view of the sender there still is a problem on the sender side if the sender has been trying to offend intentionally.
What the receiver does with it is their own choice.
A good point, and often relevant!
And when it comes to jokes I think it’s relevant too.
I think the most important thing about jokes is that you have to know your audience. Some jokes won’t land well. And some won’t be understood, some won’t be interpreted well, and some are interpreted as offensive even if no offense was intended.
It might’ve just been a mistake of the sender to share that joke at that time with that audience.
You could try to offend a friend in a playful way as a joke. That’s fine, and could be fun.
Try doing it with someone who is a stranger and they might interpret it different and take offense. This doesn’t have to be malice, but could just be a stupid joke made at the wrong person.
It appears you are some sort of troll. Have you ever thought of not being a contrary ■■■■? You may get more girl/boyfriends that way
What, can’t handle criticism? Can’t have a civil conversation without calling someone a troll because they dare question your motives? We all know, you aren’t just asking questions here.
You have to be kidding. What do you mean?
What are my motives? Genius.
That post you responded to was meant as a joke. I thought it would be funny and hoped that you as OP of a thread about being able to deal with jokes would see the humor in such a meta joke.
I see you’re not taking it well, sorry about that.
Ironically I think that’s a nice example for the topic of this thread.
Simple experiment.

If I called you a joke, could you deal with it?
Yes, I do believe that. Being offended has become fashionable. And it happens throughout all generations, not limited to a specific generation.
It is somehow related to certain people wanting to be somewhat ‘special’
I dont let things that ppl deem “offensive” bother me. Why? I dont like giving them the interaction they are looking for.
I’ll leave this from a British politician
“Nobody has the right to live their lives being protected from offense or from hurt feelings. It is an occupational hazard of living in society and if you really can’t take it, become a hermit”

The police website disagree, most of their report categories are for hurty words (hate crimes) , not one for ganking.
