Since another thread is being heavily offtopic trolled on this, thought I would make a new to clear it up.
Captain’s Quarter’s is not WiS, WiS was project to go through the door, apparently some CCP once said they had been through the door, but as far as I know, there were never anything released for players to see. If anyone got links, please share below.
It is also rumored the development of efficient character rendering for WiS (to show more than one at the same time), was dependent on the vampire game, which of course failed completely since, well, CCP records of games … Dust514, DustII, Legion, Valkyrie, Vampires, Gunjack, Vanguard whatever they all were all called, I think some of the Dust "kill current make new project"s, even died unnamed.
But to put it straight. We had Captain’s Quarter’s, but we never had Walking In Stations.
They planned and had worked on WiS for YEARS as an addition to EVE, with several iterations, showcases and whatnot. At the time EVE was in a bad shape, they started to realise that they lacked the talent and knowledge to fix EVE (spaghetti code and also sacking the Devs who made the game) meaning they simply didn’t envision EVE lasting for much longer because of that and also because the game isn’t “mainstream”.
Then they started working on World of Darkness and as that grew and they started pouring more and more effort, (dev) time and resources into it at some point the idea of ditching/cannibalising EVE began to grow. EVE hadn’t been worked on for YEARS nor did they really plan to, Apocrypha was made by Seleene and a handful of Devs in a cave with a box of scraps, in just a few months of time.
Everything else was devoted to WoD, to the point where they used EVE as an alpha for their new GFX engine, which became CQ.
I wouldn’t mind CQ back, however that would take 6-9 months to bring it to 64bit client according to the devs when they retired it. So don’t want it so badly that it takes away from the rest of the game.
It got axed because WoD was dead meaning there was no reason to alpha the technology, CQ was never meant to be actual fleshed out EVE content meaning there was no incentive trying to expand on it, not even to maintain it.
I’m not blaming WoD, I’m simply stating what happened and why. You have to understand that planning these sorts expansions and decisions takes a long time, especially when it’s CCP who needs 8 years to iterate on something basic.
They started working on WoD end 2006/early 2007 and that means they had a plan covering several years (5+), at that time they simply didn’t think EVE was a viable long term product because of its (and CCP’s) issues. As said earlier, CQ as it ended up in the game wasn’t meant as an expansion for EVE, it was meant to test the technology for WoD and when it became clear that WoD wasn’t going anywhere they axed CQ.
CQ stayed in the game for the longest time, and I’m not convinced it and WiS were ever something developed for WoD. If anything CQ/WiS was probably ported over from WoD.
WoD was officially shut down in 2014, CQ was removed in 2017. That COULD be a coincidence of course but 3 years is a typical decision and iteration time span.
If they made a tech demo that was never meant as fleshed out content for EVE itself and they never iterated or expanded on then obviously it’s going to suck and be entirely meaningless, thus people aren’t going to use it much. Which they then used as a reason/excuse to can the whole project.
That doesn’t mean people don’t want WiS, it means people don’t what that version of WiS that sucked, did nothing and wasn’t worked on.
CCP wants return on investment. Perhaps through monetisation, perhaps through added game feature that will attract new types of players.
The problem is that it’s a wild long term gamble with requirements and features outside the scope of what IS, what they have. Since they have an incredibly terrible track record when it comes to creating new things they’d much rather not risking doing that in EVE itself.
On top of that the null lobby CSM isn’t helped by WiS because it would keep their worker bees from working, so they keep wormtongueing CCP about how bad WiS would be.
Personally I’d love to see WiS in any decent, workable capacity. As I’m seeing it the real problem they have is how they’re going to implement it without affecting the whole game.
They could limit this by creating a new Citadel type that doesn’t get any extra bonuses and just has basic ship hangar functionality and is the only location people can access WiS. Beyond the normal fuel requirements also needing trade goods like foods, strippers and drugs… all the basic necessities for a functioning society.
To then use that framework to start adding content and game mechanics over time. This way it’s not an integral part of the game and thus it won’t (instantly) affect the whole game. And even the null lobby CSM could agree to it because they could simply choose to not use that citadel type.
Well for technical details, we aren’t even in space while docked, so it seems to pretty much run completely separate. In any regard as logn as they keep it somewhat simple the server resources aren’t much, the main workload for such is in rendering models which is all client side. As I remember it though, there was also a division among players between homicidal mass murderes that wanted to be able to kill everyone docked nonstop, and people think that since we can’t get weapons into stations it ought to be somewhat safe.
As for how many really want CQ though - 10% is funny number in Eve. (if check aforementioned piechart, 10% is what used CQ even after structure release). With CQ the 10% was nothing, but when it came to Blackout 10% was nearly all the players.
If they add it to all stations then guess what happens in Jita or other bottlenecks? By creating specific citadels for it they can control where they can be placed and how many can be deployed at all in a certain area.
