Captain's Quarters (CQ) and Walking In Stations (WiS)

While not mentioned in this thread (I think), just being able to stand and see ship from that angle, is one thing I recently have seen people mention they liked.

Also a lot of you trolls have “missed” that this is not Player Features & Ideas, we are not even in the Technology and Research Center part of the forum.

Except as already pointed out, there are positive ones posted right here in this thread. Posting wrong information without even reading the post you are responding to, is trolling.

You need to go up 2 levels, then into a different section of the forum, and find the correct sub thread there, for the area where we say it needs to come back.

Sadly not, none of these actually serve as a net positive, they are the same bad ideas floated around each time this thread is made, you might want to go read the last bunch of them to see whats already been suggested and shot down

I mean you can call it what you want, i’ve read this thread numerous times over the years, its not new, its not fresh, its not a good idea and yet again its still not happening

Not really, this thread is just asking for it to come back, you want them to re-enable a pointless feature that doesn’t actually add anything meaningful to the game and just serves to be a time and money sink

Its not happening

As fun as this has been, I’m out. CQ and WiS are dead. CCP has indicated they’re dead (numerous times), so I don’t know how much more ‘dead’ we can make it.

But Pearl Abyss are known for their jiggle physics expertise and the only effective way to have it is in a WiS environment where avatars can witness and interact with each other.

And you still havent even read the post you responded to.

Expect the maximum effort for responses to be “troll” to you in the future.

I’ve read them, you just seem to think you’re making a different argument than you are, there is no benefit to investing in WiS, which is why its not coming back, you are free to dislike that and disagree as much as makes you happy, but the fact remains, its not coming back

Nothing listed here nor in any of the many many previous posts about WiS has managed to come up with an idea that would make it viable from a cost perspective to bother getting it back up and running, if you can come up with a way for it to be financially viable then by all means suggest it to them, but i’m willing to bet they have probably considered whatever you will come up with and will already have dismissed it

So again, if calling me a troll because i disagree with you makes you feel better then go for it, i’m not offended by your incorrect name calling, and it won’t change the outcome

The last attempt by CCP to do WiS before they completely shut down work on it was for WiS to be done in exploration sites… The goal was to have different teams, up to 6 members per team, 3 teams per site if I recall correctly, to hack various lockers and control consoles which would set off traps when failed… They also had it set up so the teams could kill each other and take the rewards found in the site…

Course there was a really big issue with the project, they could only have 2 avatars active in the site at the same time… When they added any other avatars, the entire system would crash…

CCP actually released a progress video review showcasing 2 avatars active in the site… Unfortunately when CCP finally pulled the plug on Captains Quarters, they also removed a lot of their videos about WiS so yeah, I have no link to post about it…

With all the development they’ve put into first person shooters, I would think some of that code could be used for WIS.

Well, when I was new the talk was that the game engine for vampires (which must have been World of Darkness, WoD) was to be used for WiS (rendering pretty much means drawing the object on your screen). You can see the fate and influences already explained in the thread.

And you are right, this could very well have been used for WiS, with CCPs own code, they can add any functionality they want. Any other 3D engine can be used for a project such as CQ or Vanguard, as long as the developer has complete low level control of inputs, so the products can be synced up. An engine that requires to be loaded on its own fx, can’t be loaded from inside another game, or if an engine comes with its own server to be used with, it can’t be linked up with Eve to communicate who gets hit by orbital strikes.

This is where you just know Vanguard failed when you ask “So are we going to have orbital strikes?” and the answer is “We don’t have anything yet, but we put in a framework so it will be easy to code.”.

The framework does not add possible options, it only reduces your options to what the framework provides. If your options are well defined, this can be ok, and in return you may save both on design and code time. But if you want open options, a framework just gets in your way.

You will see this everywhere you have lazy incompetent programmers.
Step 1: We found a new framework, we need to stop making anything new for x months to catch our code up to this marvelous wonder.
Step 2: We are having trouble with old outdated code, and the New Framework Of Marvelous Wonder, we are delayed another y months.
Step 3: The old outdated framework, formerly known as New Framework Of Marvelous Wonder, well it was great and we did learn much from using it, and all the effort was clearly worth it, but now it is is sadly outdated and holding us back, so we can’t make that new thing, it is simply impossible due to old code restrains.
Step 4: We have been held back for long enough, and we fou… Oh wait this is Step 1 … You heard this before? Well this time, you just watch and see!

It’s a viscous cycle.

Yeah the reason for carbon being developed was to mainly power the WoD MMO, EVE would just benefit from the same tech as a side effect so you’re remembering correctly

It was called Ambulation before people started calling it Walking in Stations.

I count myself as one of those pro-WiS players who laments the loss of CQ, WiS, and CCP’s limitless vision for EVE as a wide ranging MMORPG that extended beyond only spaceships in space.

I accept that, for now, CCP are not going to be introducing anything close to WiS to EVE. But never say never. EVE Is more than 20 years old. Who can say what they may release in the next 20?

In terms of what features or game play WiS could offer? Here’s a few thoughts that came to mind as I read through this thread so far:

  1. A straight forward 3rd person avatar environment, with access to existing game mechanics (market, wallet, etc), with solo and shared (corp/alliance/public) spaces. Essentially a more immersive representation of the game as it currently exists, as an alternative to the current station and structure interiors. While the art team’s amazing work on the current station and structure interiors, makes the spaces feel active and alive, they offer no real game play or features in and of themselves. An interactive space would immediately cater to the RP playerbase, and would offer the potential for additional revenue to CCP via cosmetic items for those spaces, in the same way ship SKINs, SKINR and avatar cosmetics do now. This is essentially a modern equivalent of CQ, but with the shared spaces that CCP revealed were closer than people realised at the time.

  2. Hacking. New skills and/or equipment enable avatars to hack NPC stations to loot blueprints or items normally only available from the NPC LP store. Would act as an isk sink for the initial skills and blueprints to manufacture the equipment needed. Includes consequence for the hacker in terms of NPC standings.

  3. Theft from target corps. A variant of the current ESS theft mechanic. New skills and/or equipment enables avatars to intercept and steal passive corp incomes, for example corp taxes (from POCOs, ratting activity, etc.). Allows players to disrupt or otherwise impact a target corp’s ability to rely on relatively secure passive income. Includes consequence for the thief in terms of suspect or criminal flags. Target corp receives a warning in the same way that a structure being attacked does. Generates conflict?

  4. Eavesdropping. New skills and/or equipment enables avatars to tap into the comms networks of corp offices at the current station or structure for a limited time (5 minutes?). Maybe the player can’t see what’s being said, but they can see who’s in the channel and therefore online. Maybe they can see what players docked at the current station are saying, but the not players in other locations. Target corp received a warning. Eavesdropper received a suspect or criminal flag. Generates conflict?

  5. PvE. Avatar oriented missions from NPCs. Take an item from A to B. Go to a location and fix a thing on the station. Go to a location and clear out rogue drones or a fedo infestation, or a Serpentis base, etc, etc.

These, and other ideas, may not cater to players who are vehemently against the idea of WiS, but there are plenty of existing mechanics and game play features that are designed with a specific audience within the wider player base in mind. These include Sov mechanics and FW. That not everyone is interested in these features does not invalidate them as worthy of CCP’s attention.

Any future iteration of WiS would be no different.
