It occurs to me that Eve already has a PvP mode - it’s called ‘Eve Online’…
Years ago, the Crime & Punishment section of the old forums held a series of Thunderdome-style grudgematches that started from, of all things, a grudge over some forum lawyering between myself and another forum-goer (who has, as far as I know, long since retired). You wouldn’t think that a bunch of gankers, pirates, and mercs would bother with “honorable 1v1 combat”, but I’m happy to report that these were easily some of the most fun fights I have ever participated in and/or watched. And what was fascinating about them was that we fought them all sans-tackle on the honor system.
Two ships enter, one ship leaves.
If you warped off, you lost. Scram/web was only necessary if you wanted to brawl and hold your opponent down, which made for some really interesting kiting fits and some particularly tanky shield fits. (And one rather embarrassing Bhaalgorn fit on my part that did not work at all as I had planned…)
We don’t need special PvP modes in EvE, we don’t need arenas or dedicated servers. CCP has given us everything we need…we just need to use it…
I like you…one of the rare people here not afraid to look human…
Thanks. It’s really easy to look at my killboard and see someone who is risk averse, but after 13 years of playing (on and off) I’m just good at picking (and avoiding) fights. I have no problem putting blingy ships in harm’s way, but only if there’s justification for it.
The C&P Thunderdome was full of out-of-the-box fits, and a lot of pilots (myself included) dropped cans and/or bookmarks to warp around grid. That Bhaalgorn fit makes a bit more sense when you notice the MMJUs in cargo. I was expecting to go up against a brawling fit, so my goal was to keep the at max NOS range and kite them. The webs were for anyone who got too close, and the damp/MMJUs were for range control. Instead I got hit with a cruise/sentry Rattlesnake piloted by someone who was way better than me with the on-grid warping and died a horrible death while barely touching them. A bit embarrassing, but also a good fight.
But I digress…
(Side note, that Bhaalgorn fight, along with a lot of the Thunderdome fights, are up on YouTube here. Try not to laugh too hard at my piloting skills; I mostly won fights by way of fitting choice, not how well I flew them.)
I guess that’s what a lot of us miss, taking chances.
The problem is many players come from the Merry Go Round. They expect to pick a class, not dream up a role; they expect a battleground with fair numbers, not a world were nothing is fair and might makes right. They expect all content to be completed solo except “raids”.
Yep, I have a Bhaalgorn in Jita fitted as a brawler but sadly my testicles have never grown to the size needed to take her out for some fun. Oh well, in EVE v2 I will be much different!
…now where did I put my bean counter…
Why did you stop taking chances?
I made a very long thought out reply and deleted it. The answer in short, lack of trust with who I was stuck with in game? Does that make sense?
I completely understand. I don’t trust most people in EvE, and the people I do trust, I trust to stab me in the back and/or rob me blind at their first opportunity.
I’ve got a Bhaalgorn in…Amarr I think?
In Jita I’ve got Frankenstein: a hull-tanked AC 'Geddon. Talk about a ruse cruise…
Yikes…you win!
I don’t think you’re ISK poor so this might sound a bit hollow but if you ever need anything, let me know. You do good work here kiddo…
I haven’t looked at its stats lately, but I think it has somewhere around 220k EHP, 185k of which is hull HP. It’s DPS is kinda “meh” so I haven’t gotten many kills with it, but the number of station gamers I’ve scared the crap out of with it is pretty high.
Thank you. I really appreciate that.
This statement has been haunting me ever since you posted it. Its the reason I never liked being a part of Goons. I just simply didn’t trust them to have “my” best interests in mind. To callous I guess. Which is a shame since I can fly a couple of cap ships. I guess they turned me off to other large null blocks thinking they were the same way. Lost a few bil to other sleezbag WH corps. Live and learn.
And nothing against them, I just liked being in a small group anyway. CCP drove off almost all my friends in this game a long time ago.
Trust is the rarest commodity in this game.
Reminiscent of an Oscar Wilde quote: “A true friend stabs you in the front.”
