I think the original names had more flavor and the new names are boring and stale.
Fiery Kernite is still my favourite ore.

I understood it perfectly. There is a divider between my direct reply to you and the rest of the post. In the rest of my post I use ‘you’ as an impersonal pronoun not ‘you’ as you the Power Armor.
The name change for me just feels like making the most mindless EVE activity even more mindless. You could always tell which asteroid produced the most minerals by looking at their icon in the overview. The name really was secondary. The only thing I looked at the info boxes for was which minerals the rocks contained, which you still need to do even with this change. In the end it fixes nothing on the user side.
I believe that icon change happened within the past few years some time? 10-20 years ago the icons were identical. But I agree that this doesn’t change a thing on the user end, since you’ll still need to look up mineral content if you’re a first-time miner.
The first-time miners can nowadays simply look at the ISK value of each of the rocks and tell which version of an ore is most valuable.
That change was added in the same patch that changed the names, so not only was the name change awful, it also was unnecessary. Redundant.
It’s nothing else beside a complete stupid overreacting about a minor change…..bottom line….. why don’t you all focus on more important matters like getting rid of botters and multiple account users and gankers in high? THIS would be considerably better for the game than complaining about a few changed letters in the scanner…..
if the change had been reversed; going from numeric to unique names, there would be more to complain about; having to learn ~80 different non-standard naming conventions, some reflecting physical characteristics, others color variations, etc…
so let’s have a moment of silence for the 5 seconds of immersion lost and move on already ….
Don’t confuse those people with a reasonable approach to this ‘major problem of the game’…….
sure, and thats the reason why such - good - changes that fill a fictional universe with flavour, lore and immersion are usually done in the early alpha/beta phases of a game. Which means: the original implementation mostly is “x types of ore grade I, II, III” and to polish the product before release and mass customer contact, creative artificial names are then chosen for each type.
So, CCP did go the exact opposite way, they degraded the product from a finished, polished release state back to a working-title stage. Which sends a clear signal: They think their players are dumb and/or want to make the game more attractive to dumb players (which can be milked more esasily).
It is only natural that smart players oppose this change.
You mean those grounded in their ways and unwilling to accept change?
I wouldn’t call that being smart.
No, I mean those who understand how good games are designed, how such a design process works and what the difference is between a good and a bad change. Because they are smart.
If you don’t understand this, you are probably not one of them. But don’t worry, CCP has done a lot recently to even support the more simple minds.
Thank you for giving me the chance to clarify that for you. If you still have trouble and want me to use more simple words, just say so!
Well…i can only speak for me…and i can tell you that i don’t bot and i don’t gank, but I do mine from time to time. And while i’m doing what i like, this change disturbs me to the heart. In my opinion it is not a minor change for the activity i like to do and i will speak up about it, if you like it or not.
So please don’t tell me to focus on other “important” stuff that is completely irrelevant to me. For me this change is important. It directly impacts my playing experience for the worse. Everytime i see it, i hate it.
Getting rid of multiple account users? How are they a problem exactly? CCP doesn’t think they are a problem, in fact the whole design of EVE encourages and pushes people toward having multiple accounts.
Me personally, I’ve reported botters, and also gotten rid of botters. So check. I have time and energy left over to argue against these name changes as well.
CCP needs to reverse this change. It’s not minor. It’s a fundamental aspect of a continuous universe simulation, which this game is. Why does your car have a name? Why are some called Dodge, Maserati, Audi? Why not just ‘Car #33’? Would you not protest if your brand of car was changed to ‘car #117’ starting tomorrow? Why do people have names? Do you think it would be better if you were called whatever your social security number is? In fact, why call this game ‘EVE’? ‘‘What is that ‘EVE’? Can’t understand it! Should just be called ‘video game #1889’ so it’s easy for everyone to know what it means’’!
This isn’t a small change and most players dislike it. However, most players are not protesting it because the change doesn’t directly reduce their wallet balance, and that’s the only way to get EVE players to take time and go and protest against a change in-game.
Please stick to the topic.
Make a new thread if you wish to complain about other issues. Or better yet, post in one of the hundreds of threads that exist on those topics already.
CCP should just change the rock names to their isk value.
”Today I mined 86 and 132!”
Even that change would have more semantics in it.
As for the grading being “less confusing”:
I wonder why no one complained about the grading scheme in itself yet. Having Grade-III as the best grade is not the default in many countries worldwide where Grade-I or Grade-A is the best.
And now someone tells me “of course this is less confusing” - only if you happen by chance to live in the correct country and know nothing of the rest of the world…
Is that the way it is? Omber III is more valuable than Omber I? Wow. I would have thought it was the other way around.
agreed, and this was fine when there were 3 grades of 12 (?) ore types. the 80 varieties i mentioned reflect the newly added ores, some from unique spawns, an added 4th grade, or wormholes, which didn’t exist previously.
‘less intimidating to new players’ also fits here.. many changes making entry-level easier are criticized as ‘‘dumbing down”. eve has great depth and i appreciate the variety, but some changes, like tiericide, streamline and make the game better, imo.
Why not just have Ore 1 to Ore 100?
Can do the same with ships…
Big Ship VII hits Small Ship III!
it’d be too confusing in ‘why was i ganked’ channel:
friendly ganker: miner you were using a hulk to mine #7 ore you know how long the ROI is for that ?
miner: no, do you?
