CCP sucks all flavour out of mining with 'Veldspar II-Grade"

Are you a miner?

Why do you think I write mining-related posts related to the upcoming mining changes like

and not about faction warfare or high sec missions?

That’s exactly it. Though I can’t say this for certain. Let’s just say I have a very good feeling that this is the case. Call it intuition if you will. Or maybe my sixth sense. Something in the aether of this universe, that is giving me a hint to this conclusion. Best take my words with a grain of salt in this matter.

You got me convinced

By removing higher-grade ores and folding them into a slightly boosted base ore, overall ore clutter in inventories and on market/contracts can be cut by up to 75%, which should please CCPs Database Reliability Engineer

I will walk myself out

Maybe… if you made the ore names this technical named in Caldari space, and then the flowery name in Gallente space, … maybe it would add color to the cold grey EVE-verse.

Same ore.. just differing names to sow confusion EVEn more.

Just like how the ‘Navy Issue’ ships in Minmatar space are called ‘Fleet Issue’.

I like it.

Give us more flavour in naming to give us the feeling this is a real universe rather than raw numbers in some game.

I don’t see this change as helping miners, more like CCP database entry and code monkeys. My husband has worked on databases, when I asked him, he said “Yes, it makes sense when you want to sort and query the data by alphanumeric order.” This isn’t about player confusion or nuclear fusion. This is coders wanting to sort data easier.

Have fun!

You don’t see this change as helping miners? :joy:

This helps miners the same way an electric motor helps cyclists or how an aim bot helps someone playing a first-person-shooter.

It helps the bad ones yet makes the activity less fun for those who made it their hobby.

How so?

By removing character, flavor from mining. Standardizing names to the point that it becomes boring raw numbers instead of keeping the illusion of a living universe.

Yes, EVE is a game. But that doesn’t mean everything has to be called by their tier like some game.

Good games have world building to think of too, or in this case ‘universe’ building.

The old mining names were fun, flavourful and allowed both new and experienced miners to experience the feeling of mastery by recognising the most valuable rocks at a glance by how ‘sparkling’ or ‘fiery’ the rocks are.

Now all of that is simplified. Made boring.

This makes it less fun.

I don’t know anything about mining, but it doesn’t even seem like they simplified anything, just made the nomenclature worse.

@Gerard_Amatin Are you aware that a flavorful adjectives is just noise more than fun?

Are you aware that a lot of the fun you have in this game comes from the way the game presents the numbers?

Spaceships, beatiful skybox backgrounds, named factions, ship names, stories… it’s all world building. And item names like those ore names too are part of world building.

While you can simplify and standardize it all because you think it is ‘noise’, eventually the game is going to be very bland and boring if this happens too much.

Net amount of fun does not go up when for example nothing comes up when searching for the Typhoon Navy Issue because you wanted to compare it to for example Raven Navy Issue

It does for me. Adds character that not everything is symmetric.

You may want to have that looked at.

Btw. Omber Grade-III is not symmetric with Kernite Grade-III

And Typhoon Navy Issue is not symmetric with Raven Navy Issue

Unfortunately, when CCP decided a while back to remove the different mining crystals types and group them by similar ore types, many were quite positive for the change. I complained that it was taking subtle variety out of the game to make it easier for the dumb, I mean new players. But CCP forged ahead and there are not one crystal per rock type, but groupings.

The old memory could be wrong, but I do believe in the past, CCP Fozzie was quite adamant about removing the various descriptions like “carbine”, “compressed”, and “prototype” for many modules into simple types under the same stance to help new players. There was a backlash from the player base that the old names eventually returned.

And don’t forget the old Fozzy Sov…
