[COMPLETED] Extended Downtime Notification - 3 November 2021

Actually that’s a thing we do with astrophotography optics, we don’t “clean” the optics and we “post-process” out the debris or imperfections on imaging (lights, darks, flats stacking). Lights are your image, darks are for sensor noise and flats are for optical imperfections.

Server 101, any system that services the public at large should as a minimum contain a backup stand-alone server to ensure continuity of service, The backup server should be normalized and positioned securely and geographically distant from the original to preclude any disaster.

That’s called the rule of three, one for you, one for the customer and one to fail.

And failure to do this, results in failure of IT to build and maintain a reliable system.

And yet Voyager and Pioneer still continue to function (in much harsher environments), our own hardware, however, you so much as look at it, it’s off to the shops.

ITT: IT bona fides no one asked for.

Get some sleep, nerds.

What amazes me. Is that anyone would think that a gradual improvement of minutes over decades of downtimes is something to be proud of. If an IT staff are doing their job, they are invisible to the client. Then you know they are doing their job well.
There are so many bright and wonderful people in eve, I am amazed that such a travesty of weakness within the eve community has been permitted to persist. You must have a backup stand alone server just to eliminate outages and for emergencies.
The built in redundancies within the system only reduce the odds of total failure but does nothing towards eliminating downtimes.

You’ve got to be kidding. Their service record is amazing.

What amazes me is that people can get so get up about a 30 minute downtime! Do you already okay for 24h per day? If not, simply extend your playtime at the other side of your time in the game, easy. If you do play for 24h straight, then a small break will do you good. Go outside. Frolic under the trees.

In case you weren’t aware, CCP are indeed working towards no downtime being a thing. Perhaps you misunderstand the complexity of Eve’s systems, there are excellent dev blogs on this. But rest assured, no downtime is coming soon™

Thank you for the input. First positive thing I have heard all night.

We are aware, and we will cry about that too, since how else could we do HS/Null gatecamp runs?

Oh and, one less coffee break.

Check on the dev blog forum, last test a couple of months or so back made it 50-odd hours before enough stuff broke that they had to do a reboot. Also worth checking out the blog on the new Quasar approach to Eve’s backend, and if you really know your db stuff there’s a link in that blog to an interview with Eve’s chief tech wonk talking about their new trickery in more detail. Mostly beyond my ken, but from what I’ve heard from those that know this stuff, it’s all good news

I appreciate that this is a full time job for many here. Whatever keeps you happy I guess!

I’m also a comedian.

Well, you’re certainly funny if nothing else…

smooches!

Don’t forget that they give free SP after every downtime. Daily Login rewards

That’s called a “participation award”. Everybody is a winner once a day.

It’s all about the doubloons and crates.

So to summarize: CCP already give out free SP daily through the Daily Login Rewards. It just takes 30 consecutive days of logging in AFTER DT has been completed and the servers are back up. Unlike your ISP and cell phone companies, CCP only has Tranquility for the main server, Singularity as the test server, and Thunderdome for events such as alliance tournaments. Your ISP and cell phone providers have servers across the city, state, and country. I used to work for an ISP call center, and the servers were in the building. You can continue to complain about the loss of less than 30 minutes of game time every day, or learn to accept that there are things outside of Eve to do.

Singularity is the closest to a backup server that they have, and they only mirror it every few months. It has a different DT than tranquility. You seriously have absolutely zero need to be on Eve 24 hours a day. I have been in massive fleet fights where everyone went to get coffee or take a bio break for a server reboot. If you already have a job and aren’t interested in helping CCP with their IT issues, and only wish to whine about it, then stop whining and deal. Otherwise, you can look for any job openings they have. I personally remember when free SP was awarded following patches or sudden server reboots that took a long time. Now they provide free SP every day after DT for all players.

The most sudden downtime I ever experienced was when they noticed a loot drop anomaly flag because a player hacked the server or discovered an exploit and caused officer and deadspace modules to drop after every NPC kill during missions. They had to patch the security flaw and ban the player.

That’s a summary? Let me get my reading chair and jacket.

It started as a summary, but then I added details so I could get a response from you
