First: If your base assumption is already wrong it is hard to discuss “solutions” to a “problem” that doesn’t really exist. Because you have failed bring a single coherent argument against the point that basically everyone can learn how to avoid being ganked with a handful of pretty easy steps.
Second: I am all with you that the Security Tags are a pretty stupid game design and removing that “pay to reset” mechanic would be among the first things I’d do if in charge of the game.
However, a game needs to be balanced to be fun for all sides of the equation. So, while I have a couple ideas what I would give gankers in return to offset this removal, I doubt you’d do that, I guess you simply want to see ganking go away as a whole.
There is a cynical little voice on my shoulder that whispers the problem is ganks still happen, and the only solution is to make it so cumbersome that they stop.
Some of us don’t care about ‘profit’ from PvP. I am already hugely rich. I kill for the fun of it….often leaving others the spoil.
And gankers generally don’t camp the Jita undock…other than the odd solo ganker. Most of those camping are after suspects. One already needs high scan resolution to zap anyone outside Jita…and the extra time it takes to accept a kill right just gives the target more time to get away.
Yes, its called EVE gameplay. I don’t understand your ‘problem’….as you do not appear to have undocked since 2014 anyway. It is really quite laughable that people such as yourself who barely play EVE whine so much, whilst people such as myself regularly fly highly gankable ships yet have no problem with ganking. The risk is fun !
Hi, sorry about the slow/small replies. Responding between help tickets. Yes, I was referring to the player security status mechanic. (That said, I do think resets being cheap, instant, and infinitely reusable is unbalanced. You certain can’t do that for faction standings.)
The player’s security status is supposed to the the long term punishment for repeated law breaking. (Yes, shooting people in low sec is still against the law, even with no CONCORD response.)
The problem? Being flagged as an outlaw only punishes people who play the game “honestly”. (By which I mean low sec pirates. I have no problem with their play style as a concept.)
Not only are outlaw downsides easily bypassed with alternate characters/accounts, but it does literally nothing against people who sit in station until a target is scouted. Being an outlaw prevents you from docking in a ship, but it does nothing to stop you from undocking in one, and since suicide gankers rarely plan on actually returning with their ship intact…
Which is why I say it’s a flawed concept. Sure it works as intended 1% of the time, but for the most part it’s an absolute non-factor for anyone who’s serious about suicide ganking.
Which is one of the reasons why the current “punishment” system fails. Just like irl, fines are only a punishment if the money you spend paying them off matters to you.
I pretty much always seem to spot 3~4 low security status tornadoes camping the undock whenever I swing by Jita. These are the people who I think abuse the reset system the most.
Sure, let’s go with that. I’m so glad you came up with such a reasonable suggestion.
If it was up to me? The mechanic would simply be removed. It should never have been added in the first place. Someone spent three months gate camping and podding in lowsec, and now they want back into high sec? Too bad. Enjoy your -10 status. Grind it back like any other kind of standing if you want to fix it.
Okay, so say they remove ganking completely. I’m guessing it’s a matter of weeks, if not days, before miners start complaining that belt rats spawned and killed their hulk, refusing to listen to the people saying to replace a single Mining Drone II with a Hornet I. So they remove belt rats, and suddenly the issue is that Hulks have too little cargo bay and no built-in compression.
I’m not taking a side on this thing one way or another, but it’s not like -10 stops anyone from enjoying the benefits of high sec. They will just use alts to go buy stuff from Jita or wherever and do whatever it is they need to do in high sec. In this sense tags don’t really matter much. And grinding the status back was always possible, and yeah it took longer, but it wasn’t that difficult either. If you really wanted it back, you ground it. If you didn’t care about it, you used alts. And then there are always those for whom their -10 is a status symbol. Those won’t tag or grind it up anyway.
I’m not seeing that much of an effect in terms of consequences, except maybe saving the criminal a few days of grinding.
Yea, I feel that Eve is a game that is at it’s most healthy when each payer only has a single character. Not a single account. A single character. That will never happen though, so no point in discussing it.
That’s the point though. So that they can’t simply pay their way past the punishment, and then go back to what they were doing.
The wealthy being able to buy their way out of legal difficulties in a game set in an anarcho-capitalist dystopia is actually extremely reasonable and lore-consistent.
Negative security status is a pain if you plan on ganking. It is “fixable” with tags, but that adds more cost that has to be mitigated and makes ganking margins smaller, forcing gankers to be more selective.
Your problems seem to be distillable to the security status hit not stopping ganking playstyle, and therefore they don’t do anything. Why just not say out loud that you are petitioning to have ganking playstyle removed?
The counterplay for ganking is easy, you it requires one to actually play the game. If there was a problem with ganking, I might agree with you, but there isn’t. Ganking is very rare and very avoidable.
