Dev blog: Black Desert Online makers Pearl Abyss to acquire CCP!

And they spent 425 M just for nothing? Come on…

So not even a glimmer of hope remains.

Correct. My bad.

Agreed although I don’t know why you felt the need to state this?
PA (not BDO) is buying 100% of CCP.

I never claimed they would work “side-by-side” because I don’t know HOW they will work together. (Or, if you prefer, I don’t know how PA will decide how they will collaborate).
However, one reason for the purchase could be PA wanting CCP’s (15 years of) expertise and IF there are indeed NEW games in the pipeline these might benefit from their combined efforts.

You seemed to have missed the point of my post, which is that it’s entirely possible that PA (not BDO) didn’t buy CCP for EvE Online. As EvE players we’ve naturally fixated on that part of the deal but there could be a bigger picture here…

I don’t even know what this means…
Obviously they would want them to remain profitable and for those profits to grow and as the new owners they get to decide HOW to go about that.

Every company that isn’t wholly owned by it’s employees is in this situation, so it’s not unusual. Basically, they’re constantly riding a tiger (i.e. the investors). They hope their tiger is one of the more understanding ones (i.e. reasonable investors) which allows them to do most of the steering (i.e. hands-off investors) all the while hoping they can stay on top and avoid being thrown off! Obviously, it helps if they have a good/close relationship with their tiger …

As I said in my very first post in this thread, I don’t consider this to be GOOD news but it’s also too early to assume it’s BAD news. Because of what has happened to other companies, I remain justifiably skeptical and uncertainty is always worrisome but I don’t know enough yet to judge either way. If I did I would act on it.

ISD are unpaid volunteers.
As someone who seems to enjoy correcting others you should get your own facts straight…

Again, I don’t know what you mean by this. Unless you’re claiming every startup that receives VC funding is doomed?

This is not a theory. This is the most common and best established business practice for any product venture with a services footprint.

CCP’s decision timeline since the Summer of Rage is a textbook example of application of this. Without it, there would be no F2P. CCP has presented this as a success case to both investors and players (at fanfest, of all places).

CCP’s ability to demonstrate this application was a core foundation element required for the sale of CCP by its investors. This is not theory, it’s a required excercise in such proceedings.

Really, this is just business science. You can look it up, there’s even textbooks where CCP has been part of studies, and put forward as a success case of proper application. This is not an exception, this is the rule and a requirement in any type or selection of business mangement prior to merger or acquisition.

Yup,

It’s the story about:

3 guys building a ship.
Having fun sailing it around for a decade or so.

Then, they go on killing the crew.
Then, they go on sinking the ship.

And then, share the empty shell amongst themselves, worth x40 times what they initially invested to build it.

Moral of the story: Retirement funds.

Also: #Global Warming, #Mass extinctions, #GrabWhatYouCan etc …

In th end, Hilmar pulled the final scam on the entire playerbase.

What a glorious way to go.

CCP Games still exists. It is now a subsiduary studio. Not longer an agency with shareholders.

mhm, well just an easily disposable studio if need be, means even its name and crew could change overnight if money decides, so CCP as it once stood, is no longer referable.

Well, yeah. I mean, it doesn’t take a genius to take one look at the gaming industry and recognise how these things develop. In the end, it is as it will be. That said, it is not just an asset in acquisition terms, it is also an asset as a brand, and to some degree as a networking entry point due to CCP’s management and former investor relations.

This makes it unlikely that CCP as a studio will simply be put to the sword or the fire as and when required for decisions based on asset valuation.

The same cannot be said however for people working at the studio, regardless of agreement and stipulations. Bottom line is sacrosanct, it is as simple as this.

The brand value of CCP is quite substantial, in spite of the damage CCP have caused to it with the unfortunate inability to branch out. I’m sure that part of the messaging will be at some point that CCP will be doing new and amazing things, and picking up some old vision to redefine assumptions, so to speak. Well, for a bit of time at least there is room for that, and it is even part of requirements.

Let’s be honest, a lot of CCP’s older / established customers don’t think twice about this. They know the marketing and the language, because they have their real world experiences, tend to be mature players with careers or in education towards this. It is probably a good thing that CCP right now is not ejaculating awesomesauce everywhere, but keeping it simple, limited, marketing. For PA that might be a little odd, but there’s good reason for the current approach.

But the other side of that coin is something which for some or many is harder to accept. A lot of players don’t think twice about the rest of the developing story. They have either recognised CCP’s decisions for what they are, or they simply make their own choices at distinct points regardless of what by now is referred to as the policy of boiling frogs. And let’s be honest, for many the way things are now are ok, at the end of the day.

As mentioned by others, circumstances are ideal right now. The road to this point has been long, and not without stumbling. There could have been a different road, but that choice was made prior to that Summer of Rage already. It has other roots than commercial focus, well, for the most part.

EVE is no longer CCP. But for the time being an EVE without CCP is impractical at best, destructive at not even the worst. PA know what they buy. They know why they buy. It has nothing to do with the marketing blurbs, it comes down to the bottom line. And yes, that will result eventually in PA removing CCP as a construct and a studio, but it will be very easy to spot the conditions for that to become possible, or even worthwhile.

CCP is careful. PA is calculating. Different business mindsets. Different scopes. But they have found each other in a way that is beneficial to interests. It is a little bit sour to some that CCP’s interests are those of shareholders and not the company, but let’s be honest, what did they expect? A company is an instrument. Company culture is marketing and toolbox in servitude. Nothing more, nothing less.

Change is inevitable, and the direction of change was decided the moment shareholders decided to sell. Which was well before they met PA. The choice of PA consolidates that direction firmly.

But change will not be cataclysmic. It will be gradual. Controlled, calculated, as it has already been undertaken and executed.
