Devblog: Preparing For The Future – Retirement Of Captain’s Quarters & Twitch Integration

Still ships though!

lol - EvE is like a weird romance; you love them, so you endure all the strange things they do.

CCP: “we’re getting rid of CQ, nobody uses it.”

players: “Ok…but…isn’t it the case that nobody uses it because there isn’t much to do in it…because you CCP didn’t make things to do? It seems like perhaps a little circular reasoning.”

CCP: “we’re also getting rid of CQ because it’s old code and things behind it now and it would be a lot of work for us to update it.”

players: “Ok…but…isn’t it the case that if you had implemented things even 1/20th correctly and maintained and updated by smaller pieces as you do now with other things over time it might not be so much work now? It seems like perhaps a little circular reasoning and a bit of an excuse to cover getting rid of the last reminder of the incarna fiasco.”

We love you CCP, sometimes you’re awesome but sometimes you’re so weird.

I’ve quit EVE in 2010 - and returned only because there was Incarna announce + I’ve played since when only because the game has WiS (and incursion communities).

Thank you, CCP - for finally letting me go!

Can I at least get my couch as an in-game item?

The Aeon is basically a couch? :man_shrugging:

My attachment to CQ aside, this sounds like a good idea, obviously.

Wanting to see more avatar gameplay motivated a lot of my artistic interest in 3D, and CQ will always be meaningful to me no matter what happens in the future. I’m disappointed, sure, but I’m very grateful for how it impacted my life and choice of career.

Is it because of CQ that you made the frozen drawing?

I couldn’t agree more! And I have patiently awaited many proposed and promised changes, which I realize take a lot of work and development, but we still have pos’s after 6 years of waiting, and we still don’t have new content promoted 5 years or more ago here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI53ydJaus8

Please CCP #makeevegreatagain !!!

Give your customers the in depth content and immersive experience you have long promoted and we have long awaited. Stop changing the same features repeatedly when they are only becoming more problematic.
Welcome new and returning players with the beauty and excitement you have instilled in our hearts and minds, and we will shower you with the wealth and appreciation you will earn doing so!
Keep the game we know and love free of pay to win/play and stop destabilizing the economy with handouts which should be limited to collectibles or cosmetics for obvious economic reasons, and failure to fix or immediately post illegal exploits, lead us boldly into the stars and we will follow gladly!

Never found a more useless display of Metrics in my life… (ok maybe not my entire life)

CQ has no features…it has nothing beyond what the hangar can do other than eye candy. So why compare it to the hangar…there is no point. 3% use CQ…ok, make sense since there is NOTHING to do in there that you cannot do in the regular hangar…so the metrics are irrelevant. IF the CQ had something truely useful and unique that you couldn’t use elsewhere…THEN you’d have a basis for comparison…

Course, if you cannot tell already, I was a fan of the CQ and was dying for WIS. It’s clear to me that CCP lacks the vision to take the risks necessary to keep this game fresh and will continue to feed its core pvp base. Thats fine, its easy to jusitfy that audience and I hope the dwindling numbers don’t lead to an early demise.

It would have been amazing to see this great MMO break some barriers and expand its horizons more into the PvE realm despite the unclean PvP masses that cry endlessly about their killmails. But to extend to something deeper and more enriching.

Always watching for reasons to re-sub…have yet to find them. Good luck CCP! I enjoyed the time I had, just wish there was more.

Ok, commence train wreck

I’ve been playing EVE on and off since '13, and I’ve used the CQ once. I know people use it and want WiS. But pining for WiS and berating CCP over it is asking a bit much.

Think of it this way:

I’m guessing that the amount of travel-able terrain in Halo (any / all of them) would fit in a few levels of a current Astrahus. So you’re asking a company - which you complain about constantly - to not only make your favor spaceship game, with all your pet features, but also now build Halo (or at least The Sims) so you can get out of your pod and watch exotic dancers.

And of course you’re going to want varying racial environments, and many interesting (and likely offensive, because EVE ;)) ways to interact with NPCs and other capsuleers. Oh, and items to collect and upgrade. And WANCs (Wall-Applied Nano-Coatings!!) for all your rooms. And…

Oh, and then wait: you can go OUTSIDE THE STATION?

Sigh. WiS was a nice - and to me silly - idea, years ago. Instead of complaining that CCP had an interesting idea and finally decided they couldn’t pull it off in a way you’d appreciate, perhaps let them off the hook and be glad that they’re going to have more developers working on the things they have going right now.

dust settles

No that was mostly the Incursion expansion that included the updated character creator

This is incredibly disappointing to remove a half-assed feature yet at the same time, brings no promise of a revamped version of it in the future. Maybe CCP should learn something how FF14 turned itself from a humiliation to a success, and realize that players will like it better when you turn off a shitty version of something, and immediately replaced by an intended, much better version of it.

We need a way to measure salt, after all.

While a lot of you are whining or trolling, or both, many of you are overlooking a serious issue:

The fact that we’re shutting down unused bits of eve to save dev hours smells a bit like they’re prepping in case they have to put EveO in ‘Maintenance Mode’ if/when the new overlords arrive.

Having had mmos shut down around me before, this is giving me eerie ‘Warhammer Age of Reckoning’ vibes where we start dropping features (albeit, WAR’s were planned features and Eve’s are problematic current ones) before the long, dark plunge.

Oh maybe if you actually worked on it some more? You know like the whole grand plan you had for it that got everyone excited…

So perhaps if you take the time to fix it up into a proper system with features you wouldn’t need to mothball one of the coolest ideas that has ever been implemented into EVE.

That post just reads we are taking the lazy and cheap way out while trying to falsely fluff up the idea it was not a liked feature.

Well…I call ■■■■■■■■.

Obviously, I must be one of the 3% who actually USE the Captain’s Quarters, so by all means, totally disregard everything I’m about to say as it obviously has no bearing on the outcome of the discussion in the first place…such as the life of the mere 3% of the EVE population it would seem.

I love walking around my Captain’s Quarters. I get a nice view of my ship, a nice view of my ass, and I get to sit on my couch and watch all the latest news taking place in the New Eden. It’s kind of relaxing to watch the big screen filter through the same vids over and over again…OH, by the way, when the feature was first released, I was one of the few EVE pilots who figured out how to play local video files on the Captain’s Quarters big screen so you could actually sit and watch a movie on your couch if you wanted.

That being said…that’s basically all you could do. BUT…that was CCP’s choice…not the players’. We (the players) actually discussed hundreds, if not thousands, of additional features that we would have loved to have seen implemented as aspects of “walking in stations”. Some of the more notable ideas that I have personally witnessed and discussed with others, were things such as moving all the corporation management tools to the CQ, providing a corporation conference room so that corp members could actually sit down together in the same room, or something so simple as allowing live fanfest feeds to pipe through your CQ big screen so you could actually “watch” real-world events as if they were taking place simultaneously in-game.

None of these things obviously ever came to fruition and yet CCP seems surprised that the CQ has such a low usage metric.

Well whoopity ■■■■■■■ duh! Who could have seen that one coming?!?!

I just have three more points to make and then I will end my little rant and go back and sit on my CQ couch and bitch and moan to myself:

#IWasThere #ThisIsEVE #EVEIsReal
(or maybe not)

Sincerely,
Disgruntled 3%-er

From the very start of the devblog:

"…march will begin toward the third decade of EVE Online.

As part of the focus around preparing for the third decade, the EVE development team here at CCP have been looking at updating and optimizing the EVE Online client in preparation for the long-term future of New Eden…"

It’s 5 years away from starting the third decade of EVE. So if you believe what Falcon wrote in the devblog, then there’s no need to be alarmed about EVE going into maintenance mode.

An alarmist view that dismisses the devblog is surely no different to the whining/trolling you are referring to?

I’m part of the 97%. If the clothes don’t show in the portrait I never cared about them… I think I spent 1 second picking the shoes and trousers I’m wearing but two orders of magnitude more time on facial features and headwear.

I’m okay with this decision. And honestly, imagine if they announced the opposite: “We’ll focus a lot of time and effort on walking in stations…” I think 95% of the players I know would complain about that! I imagine people could blow up the Avatars near Amarr VIII station to make a statement…
