Do you have a convention for naming your ships?

Greek or Latin fit too, basically any of the big imperial cultures from the classical era

To me arabic or egytpian seems to fit better.

Correct yes, much more so than anything Western but it does still work.

The closest in the western world to amar would be british aristocacy but theyre too british.

Call your ships ā€œSalvos Rhoskaā€ and maybe you will trigger one of my many haters into aggressing you.

And if they do and get CONCORDOKKEN, you can say in local: ā€œYou have been salvoshed!ā€ :stuck_out_tongue:

I have no affiliation with CONCORD :confused:

All the mad/tears I have caused, is entirely on me.

Contemptuously tapping on your phone while on the bog hardly constitutes tears salvos.
You have to undock once in a while to harvest tears.

Youā€™d be surprised.

Being in Gallente FW militia, and flying mostly gallente hulls I use the decals on the ships themselves for inspiration. I name my ships with a generalised alpha/numeric which is commonly in-decipherable; but which allows me to instantly understand. As such I can instantly pick the correct ship from my hangar and immediately know how it is fitted, without having to rename it.

Examples of names are F03-S/2, D01-B, or C03-G/2. The first 3 digits come from the gallente ship decal. For instance, F02 is a Navitas or Thalia. F04 is an Incursus, D01 is a Catalyst, C03 Vexor, and BC01 a Brutix (or their tech 2 and factional variants.

The designation following indicates the fittings role and the quality of fitting. B = Brawler, D = High DPS Brawler, P = Dual Prop (Speed Intercept Brawler), K = Scram kiter, A = Web kiter, S = Long point ā€˜Skirmisherā€™, N = Sniper. there are also specialist designations. E = EWAR, G = Energy warfare, L = Logistics, and X = targeting support. The slash number indicates the tech level of the fitting. Blank = tech 1, ā€˜/2ā€™ = tech 2 fitting, ā€˜/3ā€™ is deadspace or faction fit, and /Ec is tech 1-meta 0 ā€œEconomyā€ fitting.

As such:
C01-B/2 = A tech 2 fit Thorax fitting with Blasters, 1600mm plate, Scram, 2xWeb, and MWD.
F08-P/2 = A tech 2 fit Federation Navy Comet with blasters, dual prop, scram, double overdrive, and poly-carb.
D02-S/2 = A tech 2 fit Algos with 125mm railguns, MWD, long point, and defensive web.
F02-L/EC = A meta 0 tech 1 (Trash fit) logistics Navitas designed for attrition warfare in FW plexes.
C01-S/3 = A Vigilant with tech 2 250mm railguns, faction long point and webs.

As you can see. Using this simple code I can readily view the contents of my corporate ship hangar and immediately pick the correct fitted ship, and know exactly what it can doā€¦ I can also hand out ships to my fleet and know exactly how they are fitted, and that everyone is on doctrine.

While on fleet operations, however, it is common practice to rename ships. Typically we display IFF information. Gallente commonly name their ships beginning with ā€œFederalā€ and the Caldari commonly prefix their names with ā€œStateā€. So that we can more readily identify friend or foe with D-scan.

Sometimes we name our ships incorrectly, (which we call a false flag), or copy the name of someone else in system. Occasionally this might catch someone out; but we donā€™t commonly do it. As we take pride in our allegiance and fly our flag proudly. Even when heavily outnumbered, we name our ships accordingly in brazen defiance.

Im legit impressed.

i leave naming off ships to the rp nerds that replied above me

This is fun. Iā€™ll chime in.

I try to give my ships normal ā€œPeopleā€ names, strongly based on the specific type of ship (Catalyst), or class (Destroyer). I enjoy wordplay, so Iā€™ll use letters from the name in-order if at all possible. Examples:

Catalyst = Caitlyn
Marauder = Maude
Mach = Mac
Ferox = Fox
Drake = Dr. Drake Ramoray (Iā€™m a Friends fan)
Nemesis = Nemo
Jackdaw = You can figure it out
etc.
Still canā€™t come up with a good one for my Scimitarā€¦

Oh a few methodsā€¦ ( i like the naming thing )

One of my JFā€™s ā€œNOT DURING WARDECā€ ā€¦ forā€¦reasonsā€¦ yesā€¦ i didā€¦ so it helps me remind.
A few freigters are numbered ( providence, im now at Slaveboat IV ) ā€¦ for ā€¦ reasonsā€¦
( rip, I , II and III )

Widow ā€¦ Alabama Hotpocket ā€¦ If you ever met a Widow on the angry side, you know why.

Titanā€¦ bridge a lot with it, ā€œValhalla Awaitsā€ ā€¦ for wellā€¦ reasonsā€¦

Regular pvp boats ( the oneā€™s that blow up more often, just get one nameā€¦ and then numbersā€¦ )ā€¦

Being an Intaki roleplayer, and CEO of the Intaki Liberation Front, all of my ships are named in the Intaki language (itā€™s a thing).

They tend to be themed around their purpose or style, and so examples include my gas-huffing Venture Rhayamuk (Nebula) and my Zephyr Maruvaatraavi (Solar Wind).

My convention for naming ships:

  1. Remove my name from the default name ā€œGerard Amatinā€™s ship typeā€, because the default name gives the enemy free intel on d-scan
  2. Something with the shiptype. I probably call my Algos an ā€˜Algosā€™
  3. Add something that helps me remind the fitting, some random letter to keep it unique compared to other fits I may have.
  4. Add nothing that might provide enemy extra information on d-scan
  5. Call it ā€˜free baitā€™ if itā€™s obviously not a bait ship. Or it is.

With a name like that you provide people free intel, they see the interceptor called ā€œSabriz Adoudelā€™s Nyxā€ on d-scan and know itā€™s you flying the interceptor and not someone else.

Confusing people by calling your interceptor a Nyx is fine, just donā€™t use your own name. Bonus points if you use the name of someone else in system. :smiley:

Covert Ops Frigs - Native American Tribes, namely, Navajo, Cherokee, Comanche

Gila - Wild Weasel (Looks like an old F4 Phantom, and Wild Weasels were tasked to destroy Soviet AA systems)

Noctis - Udiewefly (as in ā€˜You die, we flyā€™ for salvaging)

Blockade runners - after famous Confederate States blockade runners, i.e., ā€˜A.D. Vanceā€™ (most of which were caught and destroyed)

Stratios - ā€˜Stratocasterā€™ for obvious reasons

HACs - after WWII Pacific battles (Iwo Jima, Tarawa, etc. )

Literally the name of the Doctrine it is from or my face smashed against the keyboard.

My older ships had a naming convention that I have long forgotten, Lost like the memories of my childhood.

update in my comment from months ago:

Amarr ships -> classical era philosophers (plato, socrates, etcā€¦)
