Do you prefer the new or old forums? [POLL]

Mobile devices are pretty quickly replacing books and infinite scroll is much nicer on a mobile device than pagination is.

At the end of the day, it’s impossible to please 100% of people, but pleasing the majority of people is a good goal. Mobile devices are ubiquitous on the web, so it’s a good goal to make a pleasing user experience for.

Unfortunately, there are also some people that no matter what CCP does, they’ll continue to complain regardless. What should CCP do other than ignore them?

Not only that, but pagination means a page load. Part of how Discourse manages to be so fast and responsive with all the bells and whistles is that it loads the page once, and then never has to load the full page again the entire time you are on the site. Loading as you scroll happens smoothly, rather than waiting several seconds, and having to use the back button to go back past an arbitrary post limit.

The blue scroll bar actually works pretty well. I tested with that 900 post thread in GD, you can navigate to particular part of a huge thread rather accurately. And it appears it only loads the part where you scrolled to, so it actually saves data than loading pages.

I’ve also noticed that your page URL updates as you stop scrolling so that is just another way to jump to a specific post :parrot:

And of course CCP opted to go with something that suits an unknown minority.

How many people actually sit at a computer with their mobile phone reading forums?

And the overall layout, WOW. I just went looking for a thread I had viewed earlier, opened up the category it was in and be fuked if i could find it. Scrolling through all that shite to find one post is just not worth it.

If this is the future of Eve forums, I’ll stick to Reddit from now on…

NB, In wide mode (which is slightly better) the annoying scroll bar at the right covers up the Reply button if you happen to resize your browser, so you can’y actually reply to posts

Aside from this temporary forum, General Discussion has the most threads and it’s only at 10 at the moment.

You don’t need to look at the categories in ‘all’ mode. You can select which subforum you want, just like with the old forums:

It’s different to the old forums, but not less functional and just as easy to find stuff (and search works properly) when you get used to it.

Search is fine if you know the exact name of what you are looking for - It is not intuitive at all…

But in this situation it was the New Forum Feedback thread I was trying to search - Once you have viewed a topic it somehow disappears and ends up in an endless list.

Click on NEW FORUM FEEDBACK and scroll down, you will see 102 “posts”, are they, or are they threads, who would know it’s just an endless list…

The post i was looking at was made in the last hour but doesn’t appear to be in the last hour or even 2 hours according to the list… So where did it go?

Just like the old forum with pagination, when threads are posted in, they come to the top.

So if a forum was moving as quickly as this (eg. Character Bazaar or Corp Recruitment forums) threads disappear off the front page quickly.

Here, the difference is there is no need to click through different pages. Definitely different and will take some time to adjust to, but I suspect, once the initial flurry of activity passes, threads will remain close to the top of forums for a while, like they remain on the front page on the old forums for a while.

Yeah it isn’t. I have different sized monitors and had the forum on my largest to get a good look at it. Moving it to the monitor i usually have forums and other apps on caused the issue, now even after closing and reopening the browser the scroll line is in the same place - over the reply button…

Honestly what’s going to make or break the new forums is the same thing that (broke) the old forums: whether or not they’re overmoderated.

Agreed. If it was not a ‘General Discussion’ it would be locked or moved somewhere that no one would read.

Just to clarify, the wide mode is being developed by Avalon, as many people want it. He has been working on it for only a few hours and it is still experimental. I will pass on the issue with the scroll bar tonight, but again the wide mode is not a finished product by any stretch of the imagination.

I’ve never used Discourse before. It’s certainly different, but I want to give it a fair try.

I just check again and you’re correct. It’s still overlapping in lower resolution. I messaged Avalon hopefully he’ll fix it soon.

I have just sent him a notification on our internal communication system. So, he will see it tonight.

Having the new layout for mobile devices is a HUGE improvement. As with any change, it will take everyone a while to get used to it. Personally, I enjoy the fact that it’s easier to follow the forums on the go.
It would be nice to see integration/quick access to things such as Evemail and other Eve sites (such as the new Lore site). As the launch announcement indicated however this is only the start of the transition.

I cannot speak for CCP but I don’t think we would see heavy integration with Tranquillity. One of the reasons for the change was to make it independent of the server so that if TQ was out of action we still had the forums.

That being said, it would be nice to have links to key Eve websites from the forums like we have in every other website.

Not a fan. I am not a forum junky personally and loved the simplicity of the old forums. What was the reason for this change? Seems like a lot of space surrounding the pages that don’t get utilized.
