No, you don’t have to make any concessions with such a rich, detailed, deep and far-flung lore such as EVE. Bringing other “universes” into EVE to “revitalize” it is the dumbest thing you can possibly imagine – especially just a year after CCP said they were now much more invested into its own lore and would use it more. It’s ridiculous just how bad CCP is with anything, including sticking to their own words.
Crossovers in general can be tricky. They need real “synergies” to make work, meaning the two stories really have to be believably intertwined somehow.
Alternate universes and time travel is often seen a an act of desperation to salvage a story line. Very very rarely done well these days.
it’s weird enough that i can’t stop chuckling, but maybe it will be interesting.
as for all the tears about the lore, the lore is more or less disregarded in how this game is played anyway. it’s interesting backstory when you have nothing else to do, but most players really don’t know much about it. no doubt there are some roleplayers who are troubled, and i do sympathize for them, but i think it’s mostly just whining about change.
1st post in the thread made me lol. I hope it wasn’t a serious attempt at an argument though, that would be stupid.
Lore itself is not enough to save a game. Gameplay ALWAYS takes precedence. I hope this is self-evident and not needing any examples. Calling crossovers ‘the dumbest thing’ is, imo dumb itself or at least ignorant. Good crossovers is a great way to open franchises up to new people and new stories. Bad crossovers can ruin them. The event hasn’t even begun so it remains to be seen. I do agree with everything Jin Endares said, alt universes and time-travel are one of the weakest plot devices although the idea of an alt universe is the only way to connect two franchises that would otherwise never meet. I wouldn’t mind them at all if I get to experience something cool and unique though. Like I said my only disappointment is that the crossover is from Dr. Who and not some other more popular sci-fi universe. But hey, maybe it turns out to be awesome and I end up eating my own tongue.
I agree and I’m all for the notion of ‘don’t like it, don’t get involved’. It’s a temporary, optional event. People who like it, take part in it. People who don’t, don’t. Win-win?
And pls, we won’t get TARDIS for the same reason we don’t get Polaris ships. Too oh pee.
Well, as always with CCP since Pearl Abyss bought them, we give them a mile and they take an AU. People claim that this is “just an event”. It’s not. Please don’t be so naïve. CCP are testing the waters to see what they’ll be able to get away with in the future. This isn’t a bit of fun from CCP - they are dipping their toes into in-game advertising. They just so happen to be using the worst Sci-Fi show on TV as a light hearted means to do so. I can almost guarantee that this will end up with billboards for real life brands, more tacky cross-overs and who knows what else. Half the enjoyment for many is the immersion, lore and universe OG CCP built up around EVE Online and for most, I believe this will be seen as cheap and insulting at best.
This path was laid way before the PA acquisition. Stop trying to portray this romanticized perception of CCP, as if their top management ever actually knew what they were doing.
It’s far from romanticized. It’s reality. You would not have seen BS to this degree prior to PA. CCP didn’t get everything right - far from it. But you really think we’d have a Dr Who crossover event back in 2010? The worst we had was balance issues from time to time. You want to be marketed at while paying a premium for Omega, then go ahead.
The trends were showing way before PA. But yeah, let’s just blame the “evil moneygrubbing Asians”, instead of just acknowledging that maybe CCP never were that great at managing their game and the potential their initial lucky entry to the undersaturated market of full-loot PvP games.
Why are you quoting “Money Grubbing Asians” as if to portray some racial strawman? You seem to find it beyond possibility that being bought out by a business could change business ethics and direction for the brand? Weird.
CCP were never perfect at managing their game but it’s kept me and countless others coming back for years. Never, prior to PA did I feel that they were insulting to their player base. They made mistakes for sure but they didn’t treat their game like some cheap mobile game and certainly didn’t treat their customers as something to be milked for cash and marketed towards. If you like the way CCP is moving EVE though, please, continue to direct your outrage and strawmans at me.
And I’m saying that these trends were all showing way before PA. That you cannot accept that, is what I find weird. Add the fact, that Hilmar is still behind the wheel. You know, the man who have always been behind the wheel.
Look, I wouldn’t mind this PA narrative, if CCP weren’t already implementing all the fundamentals for what people are whining about today. Skill trading, microtransactions and events had all their fundamentals implemented way before PA was even a thing.
However, people find this PA narrative convenient, because it’s a smaller business being bought by some bigger, faceless entity. It just seems nice to root for the underdog. Unfortunately in this scenario, the underdog has been and is still the reason for all the ■■■■.
Maybe someone in the office is on new medication you know? Maybe we’ll get a nice little letter from HQ about someone’s meth use being a touch higher than normal during the holidays…
You can lay the path for things to happen without walking it, as CCP did for years. Yes CPP made mistakes and implemented things I never agreed with but never to this degree. Annoying and disagreeable? Yes. Insulting? No. Hilmar may still be at the wheel but you don’t think being bought out by PA puts massive pressure on decisions and directions of the game moving forward? Do you honestly believe a Dr Who event would appear in EVE online without PA? I don’t .
Well, I do. I think this is the core of our disagreement. Not something we really can prove right or wrong.
I don’t think they got to implementing things as this event yet, just because of time. Given enough time on their own, we would still see the game in it’s current state today. As I said, they were well on their way. I believe that their vision in the past is the game we have today because of the fundamentals being laid at the time.
That is why I say CCP’s top management never really knew what to do with the success the game initially harbored. Instead of improving on all the good stuff people played the game for, they try to chase new users by implementing “new and hot” features no one asked for.
