I wanted to share some feedback on the current election event.
One of the things that makes EVE great is the freedom to choose how we engage with the universe. Whether that’s industry, PvP, exploration, or even ignoring certain narratives entirely, that flexibility is a core strength of the game.
The current event, however, requires players to select and support a specific candidate in order to participate. That design feels less like optional content and more like forced alignment with a predefined narrative.
For players who prefer to remain neutral, independent, or simply not engage in that type of roleplay, this creates a barrier to participation rather than an invitation.
Providing alternative paths — such as opt-in neutrality or parallel objectives not tied to specific candidates — would better support the diverse playstyles within the player base.
EVE works best when players choose their story, not when it’s chosen for them.
I also agree that content that determines and subsequently rewards activities have no place in a sandbox game should not be there, fortunately it can be completely ignored.
Just don’t select one, and attack those doing the event. Just like an election in the RL, people choose to not vote, there is no neutral option on the actual ballot. Others are also choosing their candidate based on who will do the most harm to the Gallente.
Yes. But what I want to know is when does Amarr get to choose a new religious leader?
This is just something they added hoping to give the game more flavor. I am not voting. It would seem rather off for an Amarrian to vote in a Federation election. However I question why a game heavy in lore about both religion and politics, tries to censor both? I started early on naming my ships after religious texts and someone called me “another religious nut job”. Almost immediately the chat moderator kicked me from chat without the ability to explain, Amarrians are the religious nut jobs!
So they can hold this spoof election and do whatever, but name your ship after a book in the Bible or something from Al-Quran and watch the fur fly.
And you’re feeling forced to align with one of the choices if you participate?
Why not skip the content if you don’t wish to participate?
Why participate if you don’t wish to participate?
The event is entirely optional.
I’m playing a few other games at the moment and haven’t been bothered to even start participating in this optional content just yet, only logged in to do my regular gameplay.
It is completely optional and as a fellow player who isn’t participating I assure you you can choose not to participate and stay neutral.
True — it’s absolutely optional, and I have no issue choosing not to participate and forfeiting the rewards.
The broader concern is the design itself: when rewards are gated behind a required alignment choice, it creates an implicit pressure to engage in a way some players otherwise wouldn’t.
From a systems perspective, game design generally aims to maximize player engagement and long-term retention. Structures that funnel players into specific participation paths can work against that for certain segments of the player base.
My post was less about my personal participation and more about highlighting that this type of design may not resonate with everyone, and could contribute to disengagement if it becomes a pattern. I really do enjoy playing Eve and hope for it’s continued success.
