Eve causing computer to reboot under Ubuntu 25.04 randomly on two different machines

Eve is causing my Ubuntu machines to freeze and reboot randomly since Tuesday.

Running in Eve DX12 mode

Has anyone else been having the same problem?

Both running via steam proton.

It would appear the bug was introduced with the Patch on Monday 14th July., but CCP won’t investigate as its not a supported OS

Could you describe in what circumstance the reboot occurs? I have no problems so far, but i use a different software setup…Debian 12 with X11, Nvidia with DirectX12, latest Wine Devel 10.12.

EDIT: i saw that you mentioned - randomly - so i guess there is not a single situation in EVE to reproduce. So my guess that it happens on two of your machines has to be due to your software setup. Has there been OS updates installed? Could it be a wayland problem for example?

It was suggested to me by the Eve Linux discord to try Debian as they did not have the same issue. So far Eve has been running on one machine since down time without issue so far. I am going to run it overnight just to be sure. If successful I will install Debian on my main PC.

Sadly at 9:29 am my machine running Debian 12.11 hard rebooted whilst running Eve since downtime yesterday. When I got up this morning I thought the change of OS was working after so many hours spinning ships in Jita without a problem. Could it be because I am in Jita? I have read some people have had issues with crashing there but not full on hard reboots.

Have you figured out the specific reason for the reboot yet? I would focus on that. Maybe it is because overheating (CPU and/or GPU) or something else? Is there some kind of event logger that could reveal the details that you could run?

There is no red flags in the logs, in fact there are no logs for the previous session before reboot and I don’t know why :frowning:

CPU and GPU are just idling when it happens on both machines so I think I can eliminate overheating.

Any suggestion for a way to log these hard reboots would be welcome.

Might be worth checking still as sometimes the thermal paste between the CPU / GPU and the cooler might get eroded over time which could lead to overheating as the heat is not properly moved out of the system, which can even occur under normal circumstances (during non-stressful idle times for example).

Only ever used Windows so someone else should help with that. Maybe try google. I assume the manufacturer of both the GPU and CPU / mother board has related software, hopefully with a Linux version as well.

Aside of that I assume there are dedicated system monitoring software available (obviously with logging feature) just have to find one for Linux.

It is very strange that two systems are rebooting on you. If this was a general thing, others would have reported it too. I have not experienced a linux reboot due to EVE ever.
I once had system freezes on one machine due to a faulty graphics card. Replaced that and crashes were gone.

So i suppose hat it might be hardware related as discussed above by Uriel. Maybe your RAM has issues on both machines or you drive it out of spec? Maybe do at least a ram test with memtest86?

I did do a memtest86 test on my main PC while I was testing Eve on my second. I ran memttest for 8+ hours with no errors. When the second PC Rebooted I saw no reason to continue the test. Both machines memory settings are running at XMP and what ever the AMD equivalent is called and no overclocks on either CPU.

I agree in the 20+years I have played Eve I have never experienced a crash or a freeze until this week.

I am now running a new test adding a steam launch option ‘PROTON_NO_ESYNC=1 PROTON_NO_FSYNC=1 LD_PRELOAD= %command%’ and will see how that goes.

That failed a long test rebooting after 38 Hours combined (restarting the client after downtime)

I am now running a test on Windows 11 for a couple of days to see if I get a BSOD, which might indicate a hardware problem, yet none of the computers I have tested on have ever crashed without the Eve client running.

It appears that I am the only one with this problem so maybe the error is PEBCAK! lol
