Take this with a grain of salt since I’ve only played for about a year, and have only been an FC of predominantly newbro fleets for the past 6 months and somehow found that my stream became the “newbro help desk” because the newbro experience still falls flat on its face in many areas.
This system could be an awesome aid to show new players what they can expect a few months down the road. I think it would be awesome to be able to use it to get them in slightly better fit ships for my roams to see what they have to look forward to. Since I do ship handouts, and I get players as new as 1 day old in my fleets, as well as players who put all their sp into explo or the market instead of ship skills… the fits we make for my newbros are literally held together with duct tape and a prayer. All you Minmatar’s would be proud.
This would be a great way for a newbro to figure out if they even like PVP so they’d know if they want to invest their skills into EWAR, etc.
Unfortunately, it fell flat for me when I saw it’s a paid experience. It would be an awesome login reward, or say a 1 month reward so you can try out new things. But in my short experience of actually interacting with real, flesh and blood newbros, they’re not going to be willing to pay for this. But hey, what do I know?
10/10 stars for great idea
1/10 stars for execution of idea
You’re avoiding the question, the idea as a whole about paying for temporary skills is what you don’t agree to, yet you’re somehow fine with it if it’s payable with plex.
Why would it be OK when payable with PLEX but not without?
The concept is still the same and for a newbie (intended audience) it doesn’t matter. Only a veteran with spare plex would be affected by tgat choice of CCP, but they aren’t the target audience.
Let them see what it is like. Get the temp skills… Buy plex to use that nice faction battleship, loose it to me in his mission as he shoots at me while I perform my janitorial duties, cleaning up his mess.
The idea is not bad, just flawed in execution, although we have to wait and see what the packages actually look like. CCP is in the business of selling subscriptions, something clearly hinted at in the announcement blog. If they can make rookies take the step to sub’ing, fine.
However … it doesn’t change the NPE at all. Having skills is not an experience. Being clueless about how to use them, or how to survive using them, is even a bad experience. If this were accompanied by actually pushing the new pilots through a scripted scenario, making use of those skills, they could finally get a handle on selling more subs.
But even that wouldn’t change the NPE. Guidance, for those who don’t have the patience to explore the complexity of EvE (granted, there are no user friendly resources for that right now), is what I think is needed instead. And that guidance is missing in all NPE efforts so far. The problem isn’t trivial. After all, how do you teach a kid how to play in a sandbox and enjoy it ?
Of course, if this is opening the door to selling skills for $$$ we would have a new problem later on.
Again. I’m not against temporary skills or ship permits. Not even against it being behind paywall. I’m against buying it only with RL money. Almost all plex in game is bought with $. It’s same idea as with “free” omega or alpha injectors. There is no such thing as free omega or alpha injectors only from isk. Just different person pays RL money for it. Revenue for company stays the same. It’s all about psychology. “Forcing” people to buy with RL money something that has no real long term value will only piss off anyone that will be not satisfied. Because they lost money for no benefit.
I’m really not gonna teach CCP how to sell shitt to people.
Also, number of humans that ever will be interested in EVE is not infinite and probably is shrinking every year. Last year CCP chewed 1.3 milion of people that quit because NPE is broken. Some of them maybe will look again at EVE if they will hear somewhere that issues they struggled with where fixed. But how many of them will look again at game that they lost RL money and where unsatisfied?
There is nothing bad in increasing revenue. CCP and PA are companies. They want to make money in first place. I will support ways to increase income for company to make game better and live longer. But I will never support money grabs that will result only in damaging game reputation while not tackle, even single ongoing issue.
This idea is aimed at new players who don’t HAVE plex yet, there’s no difference for new players between buying it outright or having to buy plex first to then buy it in game. In fact I’d say that doing it this way is a great way to avoid this system being taken advantage of by vets.
Sounds to me like you want this change for your personal benefit.
But there is difference if they buy in game item with certain value vs thin air that will disappear after 7 days. Again it’s psychology, basics of sale.
Why vet would care about being able to fly t1 exploration frigate or mining barge for 7 days? Any sane vet will buy SP. Any “advantage” I see right now is actually giving these to new players for free by vets.
Just because I try to defend people that can’t defend themselves? I don’t want people leaving or being so pissed at game to never ever, look in it’s direction. Yes I have personal benefit. I want better and healthier game
Or perhaps he’s just thinking of how the newbie would probably be better off just paying RL money for omega than spending RL money for 1 week of temporary skills/ship access.
Yes, I’ve read the whole thread and there’s lots of people pointing out that the problem is newbies don’t know what they want to do at first. That’s… almost always been the case. I started in 2013. I tried mining, exploration, missions, then PVP, then incursions in my first year or so. I trained into various areas that I don’t use equally now that I’m a 175 mil SP nearly 8 year old vet.
But every thing I trained was a permanent investment in my character, and if I hated a choice so badly, I could “undo” it with skill extractors since that system went in.
In any event, the limited “respec” system some are recommending instead of this sounds like a better idea, but… this one depends on pricing and on how often CCP gives it to alphas for free during login campaigns and such. I agree with the guy who recommended to Mike that it be a reward for completing the career agent missions (all 45 of them, last time I checked… could have changed in the last year or two).
Na he’s not, a newbie is still paying rl cash for it. To a newbie there’s no difference between paying for it outright or having to do it via plex, that actually makes it more convoluted.
I’m pretty sure it will be cheaper to buy those skills temporarily than to buy injectors to get those skills permanently. A sane veteran who wants those skills temporarily would want to get the expert system rather than a skill injector.
But apart from players who want to try out a new type of gameplay without too much investment, I don’t see the attraction of temporary skills myself. But I can see how they can be useful to other people.
It’s not so hard to figure out why you’d be for something like that. Noobs flying ships they barely know how to handle is a gift to you and your terrorist friends from CODE. CCP is doing you a favor, serving you noobs on a silver platter.
