Ganking intel question

If I’m flying a Bowhead (or any ship for that matter) and a potential ganker scans my ship. Are they only able to see my cargo, or can they also see my ship fitting?

So there IS a way to scan equipment. I didn’t know that. Thanks!

It works for stations also. I used to scan the refining rigs.

I don’t believe they can peer inside secure containers, though (other than revealing any containers). Ditto for wrapped items. @Uriel_the_Flame could confirm or correct me there.

I don’t recall even if I’ve tested it in the past so someone has to check it.

I use secure containers all the time. Mainly to help keep things organized, but also for the +20% storage space each offers.

You can anchor a small audit log secure container in space, set a password then try looking into it with a cargo scanner, though best if you do it from an alt just to be sure.

I know that locking a secure container with a password doesn’t preclude your attacker from simply opening it if it drops with your wreck (it drops in the container minus the “secure” aspect).

I was referring to the container being anchored in space and if it’s locked whether you can see its content without a password if you use a cargo scanner. I thought this was what you’ve been talking about.

As for cargo scanning a ship with a passworded secure container and wheter you will see the content, I think you will but no direct experience either way so not 100% sure.

As far as I recall based on my readings, not seeing something when cargo scanned only ever saw being mentioned in regards to blockade runners and double wrapped courier packages, this is why my assumption is that the content of containers (password protected or otherwise) is always visible (but again not 100% guaranteed to be the case).

Sorry, I was referring to the scenario where you’re piloting a ship and have one or more secure containers in the hold (themselves containing various items). It’s my understanding that the contents within the containers can’t themselves be scanned (even without setting a password).

No worries, this is why a polite and open minded discussion is good, we’ve figured it out. As for the answer, not sure, so only way to make sure is testing it in-game.

Let me know when you’re around Jita or Sobaseki sometime and we can give it a whirl.

Btw just checked the uniwiki and…

It will show the content of cargo holds as well as all special bays, holds and hangars.
It will show the content of courier contracts placed in a the cargo hold or fleet hangar.
It will show the content of containers in cargo holds as well as fleet hangars.

It will not show containers or courier packages themselves just what they contain.
It will not show the cargo in or modules fitted to a ship carried by the targeted ship.
It will not show the content of a courier contract but instead just “plastic wrap” if the package was wrapped inside another courier

I guess that answers it!

Yes, makes sense that only special cases are exemption and anything else is visible to the cargo scanner.

Too bad there isn’t a way to hide your cargo (other than “plastic wrap”). Then again, the complete lack of mechanics to steal from other players beyond requiring destruction of their ship…

You can also use a blockade runner.

Or you can use a Blockade Runner.

Maybe they could make a breaching pod but that is meant for boarding the ship and stealing its cargo (in chunks and over time) or something and it would only work if the ship is both tackled, moves slower than 50 m/s and also has no shields nor armor when the boarding pod hits it (and/or any other reasonable restriction to prevent abuse) or something along those lines.
