Change what you are doing in the game! That always refreshes the game for me. I’ve been playing off and on since '08 and I’ve had a few “main” gameplay styles.
From PVP scout in a medium sized alliance, to solo explorer in low/null, to cloaky piracy, and now onto salvage and ninja looting w/ the new expansion (very lucrative).
If you can’t think of anything new you’d like to try to do, it might be time for a break, and thats OK too.
Start ganking. Sell mining permits to illegal immigrants. Let them say crazy things to you. Trigger them with kindness. Forward the emails to James and rejoice in glory when he writes a story about your heroic deeds.
Well at least exploration is mysterious and chance… oh wait WTF?
Remember it’s a game, and there’s only so much you can do before the scope of the game no longer gives you pleasure.
I think the game needs some changes.

I felt bad once, but if you gank through the pain you will see the light of James gleaming in the distance, and if you keep ganking you will finally atone for all your sins and see that where there was pain there is now only the love and grace of James.
Your two sentences here oppose each other.
There’s no way it’s interesting to change the game, if “being a game” means the pleasure it can give is limited.
The only way to overcome that is to make the game dynamic in the goal and mechanisms, and also make the players create the content. The former part requires a lot of work from the devs and may provide failures as much as good content, the latter part is already present in Eve to some extent.
