you can use tackle or not during a gank, if you ransom the ship that’s not a gank, that’s a ransom, a gank can be anywhere and is not the same as a suicide gank though similar, it happens hard and fast ideally within one volley, generally with a few.
unlike someone previously mentioned, a gank does not happen “anywhere” its primarily a hisec definition. Anything from 0.4 and lower, is just considered PVP. considering in Hisec you have to deliver enough power to destroy your target, before CONCORD destroys you.
see now your conflating suicide ganking and ganking in general, a suicide gank happens in hs and results in the destruction of the gankers ship by concord and hopefully the ganked ship as well, but you can get ganked while in any other space. eg, you jumped through a wh in your astero and there was an instalocking svipel and a few nados on the other side with a bubble and you got instaganked burning back to the hole.
I like that ganking exists.
It brings excitement and danger to even the safest part of space, high security space.
This ‘you can be attacked by players anywhere in the game’ was a big reason for me to start playing EVE, such a ruthless PvP anywhere was exactly the kind of gameplay I was looking for.
Without the existence of ganking HS becomes dreadfully boring. Non-player dangers are too predictable and can be outplayed too easily.
A game with only predictable unintelligent dangers is too easily solved:
There would be no reason to fit your ship for anything else than pure greed, ignoring all the defensive options. Freighter? Max cargohold extender fit as default. Miner? Max yield, shields are irrelevant.
There would be no reason to pay attention while playing, which causes the prices of resources like high sec minerals or hauling to plummet.
Unlike scripted NPCS players cannot be predicted as easily. People are smart and can outplay you. The possibility of high sec PvP makes ship fitting a lot more interesting and keeps high sec professions profitable.
I do not gank.
Not that I don’t like ganking, but to gank I would first need to travel to high security space, something I rarely do unless I need something from the market.
To gank I would also need other players to fly with, because unlike pretty much every other activity in the game CCP made ganking really hard to do as a solo pilot. And to play with other pilots I have to be available when those other players are also available, which is hard to do when I have little (and unpredictable) time to play lately.
So instead of ganking I limit myself to look from the sidelines and cheer for you.
Gankers, please keep high security space dangerous!
