Is EVE actually dying?

I’d say from the CCP reaction in the other thread, there is a problem. People think that numbers alone matter in this game, that stopped when they went FTP. FTP games depend on huge numbers, and a tiny percentage of the population to make money. Those numbers aren’t there…

For as long as I’ve been a part of EvE, devs have never been known to frequent their forums. It’s never been a thing. So alone, that doesn’t mean anything. Though it does feel like the official dev threads from back then (like rebalance topics) had more dev interaction than these days.

Even cutting staff, by itself, doesn’t mean anything. I work for a major retailer in the United States. In the past twelve years, we’ve seen a slashing of labor hours by almost 80%, while sales have almost doubled in the same time period. Now, almost nothing else (like cleaning, cycling inventory, etc) is getting done because there’s nobody left to do it, but profits have never been better. Yet, they want to cut more. I help process the P & L reports for my store, and the profit margin (not gross, but profit) is obscene. Yet, they want to cut more. Some companies just end up in a self-harm cycle where they’ll cut budgets just to see how much it hurts - and if it doesn’t outright kill them, they’ll cut more.

It would also explain why some individuals may appear stressed. I speak from experience that working for a company that seems to be trying to actively implode itself despite an abundance of profits is a very frustrating thing.

So don’t put too much stock (ironic joke?) in the layoffs meaning anything.

As players number decline you can bet CCP will continue with additional layoffs. And there will come a point in time when their long-term employees will start looking for the exit (no future career prospects, opportunities for advancement or simply increasing workloads for the same or less pay).

No one knows the number of bots in play, but I suspect the number is higher than our wildest imagination. The hit to concurrent player numbers would take a nosedive overnight if CCP actually did anything, so it’s no surprise that they’ve made a token effort.

Heck, the playerbase largely endorses cheating. Does anyone seriously think null isn’t largely culpable? But hey, as long as EVE keeps getting the occasional press piece what does it matter?

Glad I won’t be here when the lights finally get shut off (which by all indications, shouldn’t be much longer…).

Why not make us all happy, and sod-off NOW instead ?

I know that feeling mate. Really do.

falcon confirmed it’s not dying, but I think CODE is helping to destroy eve

The other thread was referred to as a “Garbage thread” by Falcon before being locked.
Our ideas and opinions are garbage, apparently.

Everything is dying from the moment it’s created. Things, people, games. Sorry if that’s a little pessimistic for some, but it seems that most people around here comfortable discussing death.

Let’s not fool anyone. Objectively speaking, these forums are full of garbage.

The amount of “provocateurs” and people unable to have a civil discussion have degraded these forums. At best, it’s a place where biased people vent their opposing views with no desire for solutions. At worst, it’s a place of degenerate trolling and name calling.

Look, I understand why it would be unprofessional for a CCP employee to call content on their community portal “garbage”, but if one truly and objectively look at the content in here, I understand why no one wants to engage with it.

So since we all come agreeing that Eve is finally dead.
What would you like to see in the soon to be announced Eve 2 ?

As a lapsed player I would be delighted to come back IF the issue with the busted PVP has been resolved and in particular the griefing in high security sectors. I was disgusted that EVE let
experienced players buy cheap disposable ships to gang up on New and Novice players in high security areas. Having worked hard to by a decent mining vessel and mining in level 7 space for the first time to be jumped by a gang of experienced players who could throw away ships in an effort to extort. Any game that allows Griefing in an exploit like that deserves to die. So simple question, Has it been resolved

Players shooting you is not considered griefing in EVE.
It only reaches griefing if they stalk you around space not giving you any chance to get anywhere no matter what you do.
EVE is an open PvP zone in all areas (Some restrictions on the true rookie systems), just with different rules for the PvP in different areas.

Plenty of people will be able to help you massively reduce the chance of getting ganked like that if you ask.

Clearly you did not play Eve very long. Or took the time to understand the basics of the game. Ganging up in any space on miners or anyone is allowed. Scaming isk off people is allowed, a part of the game. Very few thing fit into grieving. I personally never heard of it till I read a post in this thread.

Indeed this is a working part of the game.

All areas of the game are pvp areas. It’s an essential part of the economy and the game.

Don’t expect pvp to be removed from highsec the same way they won’t remove pvp from other pvp centric games.

It has always amazed me that evidently some people don’t think “many thousands of players have started eve and figured out how to adapt, persevere, and have often years of fun in this game, I must be able to also”.

It’s a feature, not a bug. You are responsible for your security.

You are going to make some friends here.

I was discussing in the thread mentioned and while I agree with the mind-numbing presence of loads of garbage on the Forums, there is still a problem with the reaction to it. You, me, anyone including Moderators can call the things garbage and that’s fine.

It’s the combination of closing a thread and calling peoples opinions garbage at the same time. I don’t like it. Not only does it offend the 50% non-garbage in the thread, but it also creates a lot of friction to end a discussion like this. What kind of Forum culture is supposed to grow out of that?

Normally in all those threads, like this one here, you have really different opinions and motivations. Sure, there are those who don’t play for years and come here just to troll or talk bad about the game. Why the ability to ban them is not used, is beyond me. Then there are people who for some reason are super negative about the game, despite still feeling attached to it. Then the disillusioned, neutrals, who don’t have an agenda when discussing. Again, the more positive players who try to right the wrongs they see amongst negative trolls and finally even kind of positive trolls, who’ll not accept criticism of the game as a show of affection for it.

If moderation is able to keep the trolls in check (by warnings or bans), the rest will still be a somewhat controversial discussion, but not overly negative. Players normally make sure of that. While Falcons reaction is completely understandable, it wasn’t really helping to establish a less garbage discussion culture here. It leaves behind the impression that it’s frowned upon to even take part in such discussions at all, no matter your personal view on the matter.

The non garbage posters know who the comment is aimed at and don’t get offended…
Why are you taking it so personally?

Best way to let them know how pvp and griefing are killing this game and running off players, do what I did, I stopped paying for all my accounts and stop buying plex for cool skins. Not going to pay a company that allows sociopaths to harass and grief players. More and more newer players are driven away by this constant gate camping killing for no reason. When theres no more new money from new players something will change either the game closes or there will be a button to click whether u want to participate in PVP. I figure the first cause sociopaths cant change and this is the only game/avenue they can legally get away with they do. Good luck to all who think that this constant toxic behavior will make people want to play. Pretty sure Eve 2 will have that PvP button if it wants to make it off the virtual shelf.
