Is “forcing” players to login during holiday season a good thing?

Actually, when CCP ran events consistantly it yielded better login numbers than the model of applying what is known as hypernormalisation techniques based on seduce/wish/peer triggers.

CCP just had internal strife during that time. So those initiatives were discarded, replaced by inconsistant revisions of ISD & other event models. Bit of a shame, cause the numbers were impressive.

Anyway, good or bad, suffice to say that the gift approach is in line with the changed EVE and the different venture model. That’s all that matters really, it’s just business after all. And that is fine.

As for padding the numbers, that is accurate. Deliberate, a matter of policy. But entirely unsurprising, this is business. It is part of venture management. Tied with monetisation goals it’s just another aspect of CCP’s product model. It’s their choice to make. It doesn’t require someone to have a professional background in matters such as these, it’s quite simple to figure out.

You mean like the SP system? So…what they’ve already been doing since day one?

Is there nothing someone won’t complain about?

CCP has taken your idea into consideration. Here is the leaked design for the 2019 gift :
Don't%20want%20a%20lot%20for%20christmass

Prepare the complaining, walking in stations will be revamped to walking in parking lots.

It’s quite a problem that people exist who believe that this in any way or form forces anyone… with quotes or without. A society, where this kind of thinking is expressed, is a society of slaves.

Actually, the other way around

Substitute slaves with junkies, also works …

Junkies are slaves too, though.

All mortal humans are. Both.

Just leaving it here.

I guess this is perfect description of what is going here.

2.0? Aren’t we already EVE Vista?

Hm, too edgy for me. Sure, they’re holding the stick and see who’ll jump, but isn’t that what essentially every game company, at any state of their game does, even just by offering the game in the first place? Emergent behaviour turns into conformation quickly and that’s not just an issue of mechanics or the games monetization model. It’s also player behaviour and unless the long-term player crowd would be willing to do their part, there is going to be the need for ever more effort to keep changing the game to prop up emergent behaviour against streamlining/conformation/optimization by players themselve. CCP would need to basically outrun themselves, if they were the only ones responsible for a solution. I mean, maybe that would work, if players are willing to pay more and more money.

Many players see it as “being forced” to login and this shows pretty precisely what I mean. If a competitor can do it, you’ll have to assume s/he does it and not doing it yourself, will result in a relative victory for the other. And it’s true in the way people play the game. Having invested so much time and money, people are still trying to win. Taking the in-game competetion so extremely serious, simply results in the unability to abstract from their current interest in order to see the greater dynamics and consider the options: lobby for every bit of momentary personal advantage or try to find common ground amongst the players for a long-term challenging game.

It’s not that they are unable to do this and thereby somewhat regulate themselves, it’s simply that players deny any responsibility of doing their part. The frog is boiling itself.

And of course, it is very practical to have someone else to point the finger at and declare them solely responsible. Of course, that other is also doing their part, be it the state, corporate business, another country, another group of people or CCP. But, denying own responsibility only reinforces this. It’s a very similar situation you have when putting together democracy and an economic system based purely on competition: unwillingness to take responsibility (to take part in governing) and to find compromise (to respect others taking part in governing too), leads to a situation in which most people swing between being utterly ignorant and really angry. Full of rage they’ll topple one government, just to find themselves in the same situation with a new king a few years later - again being ignorant to the inherent problems, until it hurts themselves.

Just like the majority of EVE players when it comes to emergent behaviour vs. momentary advantages.

really, what is the alternative though? would you rather ccp just not do anything at all for the holidays, because really they don’t need to give us jack ■■■■.
they have tried the single reward that you could claim at any point over a couple of weeks model (2 years ago was like that IIRC) and people complained about THAT because it gave an "unfair advantage to people who had multiple accounts and could get rewards on all of them “just for logging in once”
last year they tried making the “gifts” small cosmetic items, with the really good rewards something you had to run the agency event for (wasn’t hard but you had to do something more than simply log in) and then people complained that “it wasn’t really a gift if you had to work for it”

so for everyone who’s complaining about this years setup. and looking at the past methods that they have tried (and always gotten criticized for)
how would YOU rather receive your free gift?

Hm.

People in “modern” civilisation are slaves to technology and BigCorp’s interest in bypassing conscious thought to get them to buy things. Slaves to assholes who raise them with certain beliefs and slaves to politicians who manage to manipulate them. Counts for the folk in the middle east as well. People in africa are slaves to assholes with guns. Politicians are slaves to their own greed and lust for power. And regular folk are slaves to the system as a whole anyway. That includes us. You and me. Though I could successfully argue that people like you and me are less of a slave than some others around here.

I think the only ones who aren’t slaves are the people who still live in the woods. Or an island, or something. Maybe also “Aussteiger” who refuse to live in the modern world and rather farm their own food. I don’t count people, who are able to gather/grow their own food (gathering at the supermarket doesn’t count) aren’t slaves, because being a slaves to your stomach isn’t a thing. That’s hunger.

Hm.

The CEO work up at 3am and realized with horror that there might not be enough holiday content to keep our bright, innocent, starry eyed selves merry?

He could sleep no more and set his elves to work coming up with this second event.

If CCP decides to give us something, great. If not, fine as well. If they decide to not “give”, but create a specific event during christmas - okay fine. I do see some of the problems around that as people mentioned, but just me personally, I don’t have strong feelings about it.

If anything, I’d like a christmas tradition in EVE, where players across all groups and playstyles, come up with a present for EVE Devs. All around the year they are there for us and if we can make their eyes shine with joy, that’d really be the only thing that creates the christmas feeling for me. Demanding something, doesn’t create any magic.

Can someone let me get this straight… so you don’t have to login 13 times consecutively…as long you log in 13 times on separate days over the total 17 day period (11-28 dec) you get all the goodies?

And…what time this start?..it the 11th now…yet no redeemables (or they doing it after DT)

PS…sry, this the only relevant thread to ask this, there is no official thread for the event (well i couldn’t find one)

Thanks

Yes it will start after downtime.

Tuesday downtime is generally when they roll out or start events.
