Yesterday a dude got ganked, 4 year old player who literally did not fit a tank or anything of that nature. He didn’t even have two strip miners equipped. I didn’t do much with new players in the game other than from the communities I was involved with outside the game which had an Eve following - but I was involved with stuff like locatorsRus or whatever it was called - you’d see a lot of newer players use it to try and locate the people who ganked them then the inevitable story when more often than not there was no meaningful way to interact with that ganker again.

For me, no. If they go, then something prodded them to do so. It may have been ganking or perhaps the horrendous amount of patience needed (in the past) to ‘progress’ within the game. Some folks just don’t have what it takes to make this game their hobby. Fine.
Your comment harks back to the original purpose of this thread, in that it seeks to assign to an activity an ethical dimension. You are implying that it would be better to hold onto new players, even if it were at the cost of a playstyle enjoyed by many others.
I would rather let them go; if the game is not for them - as it stands, then let them try something else.
I suppose it’s selfish of me; I struggled to assimilate when introduced to EVE. I uninstalled the wretched thing after about 3 days, not because of the ganking, but (don’t laugh) because I couldn’t get used to clicking randomly in space in order to move my ship around!
Eight or so months later, in a well of boredom, I installed it again, determined to get the hang of the damn game. That first day, I played for 10 hours straight. Hooked.
Sometimes people just need a little help to get past the first hurdle and then can learn and flourish from there.
I’ve not claimed it would be better to hold on to new players at the cost of a playstyle others enjoy - though there have been people making such arguments in this thread. I’ve been arguing that what makes Eve special compared to other similar games is the persistent nature of cause and effect - the ability in some areas of ganking for people to intentionally or otherwise wall themselves off from that isn’t good for what makes Eve great.
EDIT: Although that could lead to the situation with scamming - where it is often faceless alts - but that doesn’t really have the same impact as something which touches the core gameplay of Eve does. And I have even less sympathy for people who fall for scams as long as it is possible to see them coming and 99.999% of scams are that.
In order for a pilot to escalate between our organizations --back then–, they had to prove worthy. I had too at my time, BTW.
If they were not adequate material, we tried on grinding until they caved into following directives to some degree or gave up, leaving our ranks and probably even the game. Most of my besties come from that strategy and we’re great friends… couple even visited personally.
It’s a necessary evil. I don’t want no rainbow of tremors as wingmen. Lack of discipline was dealt with,
It was the good ol’days. Now it’s a bit more complicated, as the game sometimes attempts to substitute comradery. Sometimes I think devs hardly have a clue of what-newbies-want. I agree. Let them go.
You got to balance it with having fun - but I’ve been in a few fights i.e. when banding together with other corps and alliances to try and save someone’s wormhole where having people lacking discipline has caused the whole house of cards to crumble vs a less numerical numbered but better put together force. At the end of the day it was all experience though, some will improve some will fold.
Then you get the flip side though - some of the most fun fights I’ve had were putting a triage carrier and ~15 T3s up against null sec home defence fleets numbers in the 100s - with varying outcomes - taking advantage of the varying levels of quality and discipline of their pilots.
