Moons suck

I still think active moon mining was a mistake that removed a bunch of content. You always heard about alliance XXX fighting someone over their R64 moon. You never hear “we had a massive battle over an athanor” because there’s no point. If I have enough manpower to take it that’s great and all but I need miners to mine it to make it worth anything, and if I can mine in so-called hostile space I may as well just take the sov.

I don’t think it was the active mining itself, per se, but that the volume was so large that you need an ungodly number of miners to fully capitalize on it. The moon minerals were plentiful to such an extreme that it was frequently better to let someone else assume the risk of plopping down the structure and its associated costs and instead act as a vulture grabbing whatever they were too lazy or slow to get.

I get wanting to put pilots out in space, and if you could get miners out in force they would make tempting targets to attack or protect. I presume that was the goal, but it never really panned out that way. I would have liked to entice miners to take (and benefit from) more risk and a different implementation (one where strategic monopolization of the resources was less tedious to organize and accomplish) might have made some strides towards getting miners more active in and integrated with the pvp ecosystem.

I onno. Looked like it could have been fun, but you’re right that it didn’t turn out to be all that much fun in practice and I can only speculate on why that was the case.
