No I wouldn’t because the time limit applies to both so it becomes a background environmental factor rather than a definitive one, and the proving grounds are the elite PvP to me. As to what you say above that, yes this is more or less how I see it.
When a hawk snatches a chicken from a farmer’s yard before the farmer manages to aim and shoot it, who are the parties of the engagement? And if the same hawk catches a quail in the wild? (Not mentioning fighting another hawk for whatever reason)
The choice of weapon and ammo is made by the farmer and it is the farmer who will - probably - have to deal with the wildlife agency outside the framework of the engagement. Hawk dies (or not) to the farmer’s action, this is obvious. What matters is hawk’s skill against the farmer and farmer’s skill against the hawk, and, to much smaller extent, particular chicken’s ability to evade the hawk, but chances are usually poor. This is at least what I see. Visions may, and do, differ.
And the CONCORD time limit is universal - all parties in the engagement are operating under the same timer. The defender is waiting X time for CONCORD to arrive and blap their attackers, so they need to plan their EHP around surviving for X time. The attacker is waiting the same X time for CONCORD to arrive, so they need to plan their outgoing DPS around X time.
To some extent, yes. This whole situation with CONCORD is not pure PvE, never claimed that categorically. There is a mix, and in HS the environmental factor obviously plays a unique role vs. similar scenarios elsewhere, making the major difference. The environment is set to make killing even a defenseless/unsuspecting player a challenging feat, while gankers, doing their ganking in HS, defy the environment and enjoy it - rightfully, it is an achievement, indeed.
Don’t want to start another round of definition juggling, nor do I want to hijack the thread and I’m getting warnings from the system. Everything I had to say I have already said and it holds.
So who are you again to give your opinion on this topic. I’m for example a miner ganker, it is all I did in the last couple of years in this game (I did a lot of other stuff previously) and I definitely made profit from it.
There are multiple ways to make miner ganking profitable:
Own the industry pipelines: Printing all the modules and ships yourself in bulk is a huge cost saver and makes logistics easier.
Scale the used ships to the target: Not all targets need a t2 fitted Cat to take down. I only use those if the DPS is actually required. For Retrievers and Covertors, if they are not properly tanked, which is pretty much the norm, two t1 Cats (~2mil piece) are enough in <= 0.7 sec. Hulk and Mack need t2 Cats with my two gankers. (hint: Notice how the Procurer and Skiff where not mentioned, should tell you something).
Not every single target has to be profitable, but a gank operation in a certain region tends to be profitable overall because there is always the odd miner that fits some bling modules.
Ganking is a door opener to all form of interactions that lead to people reacting in anger and making mistakes, which can be quite profitable.
Looting everything helps. Stealing all their ore and ice helps as well.
I know people get mad about the “mining permit extortion” but I don’t even account for them in the equation (it’s only 10mil ISK after all).
It’s ok to only have a small profit or just break even. Why do I need to make a huge profit anyway if all I want to do is continue to gank? It’s not like I have space children to feed.
All in all, ganking was overall the most interesting and diverse activity I played in this game. I know a lot of butthurt people will point out how easy it is to gank… rly? It’s a game, not ■■■■■■■ rocket science, of course it’s not super difficult. But compared to like 95% of all other activities in EVE, where you basically press F1 and watch netflix, it involves a lot more stuff you have to do and account for and it’s in my opinion also a lot more entertaining.
Indeed, it’s entry level PvP that can be affordably done by a newish player with a little guidance; albeit at the expense of their security status, that’s what alts are for.
Every time I see one of these threads I think “Who will buy my stuff when my marketing department gets downsized by a nerf?”
Okay, so I don’t know if you’re doing it intentionally or not, but such comments are usually made by people who are trying to put down a play style. They’ll often say things like:
Market PvP isn’t real PvP.
Hunting isn’t real PvP because you’re hunting PvE fit ships.
Sov Warfare PvP’ers suck. What are you going to do when you don’t have 100 of your closest friends to press F1 with you?
Ganking isn’t real PvP because your main opponent is Concord.
Not sure why they’re so intent on deningrating other people’s play styles.
Ganking is a unique form of PvP, but it is PvP. Yes, Concord mechanics play a huge role in how ganking is done, but that doesn’t mean that potential prey can’t adapt, or that they can’t do anything to influence outcomes (including fighting back). Concord is static and predictable. Players are not. Ganking might not be as prestigious as solo frigate PvP in FW, or whatever, but it is still PvP. Gankers are still competing with other players in order to determine who achieves their win states, and who doesn’t. And it is most certainly a challenging, rewarding, and fun form of PvP.
I must admit I never understood the problem with ganking - although I will hand out hankies for the gankees and do my best not to be one of them.
Do people still mistake, after 17 years, high security space for “non(not-consensual)-pvp” zone ? Or is it a sign of weakness that some loud people do not accept the risks of undocking ?
Not to stoke any unnecessary fires, but in times where there is a growth in hisec mining, as an example (see MER Jan 2020, mining value by region), or with the marauder buffs (not mentioning the paladin story again) as another example, shouldn’t there be more need of ganking to keep things balanced economically ? The orca swarms in every ice belt, the afk’ers you trip over everywhere, is that really the game we want ? Just asking for a friend.
